Bilāl went out and stopped at a gathering of the Anṣār, calling, “Umayyah ibn Khalaf! I shall not live if Umayyah survives!” A band of the Anṣār set off with him, following in our tracks. When I feared they would overtake us, I let his son fall behind to occupy them, and they killed him. They then pursued us; Umayyah was a heavy man. When they caught up I said to him, “Kneel!” He knelt, and I threw myself over him to shield him, but they thrust their swords at him from beneath me until they killed him, and one of them struck my leg with his sword. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAwf used to show us the scar on the top of his foot left by that blow.
Yūsuf heard the report from Ṣāliḥ, and Ibrāhīm from his father; al-Bukhārī alone among the compilers recorded it.
In the Musnad of Rafāʿah ibn Rāfiʿ it is stated that he was the one who killed Umayyah ibn Khalaf.
The Slaying of Abū Jahl—may Allah curse him
Ibn Hishām said: On that day Abū Jahl advanced, chanting as he fought:
What fault does seasoned war find in me?—
A two-year-weaned camel, vigorous and bright of tooth.
For deeds like these my mother bore me.
Ibn Isḥāq said: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had finished with the enemy, he ordered that Abū Jahl be sought among the dead. The first to meet Abū Jahl—as Thawr ibn Zayd related to me from ʿIkrimah from Ibn ʿAbbās, and ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Bakr also told me—was Muʿādh ibn ʿAmr ibn al-Jamūḥ of the Banū Salamah. He said:
“I heard the men, while Abū Jahl was in the midst of a thicket of fighters, saying, ‘Abū al-Ḥakam is unreachable.’ When I heard that, I made him my business. I headed straight for him; when I got the chance I struck him a blow that sheared off his foot at mid-shin. By Allah, when it flew off I likened it only to a date stone flying from beneath the date-stone crusher when it is struck.
“His son ʿIkrimah struck me on the shoulder, cutting off my arm so that it hung by a strip of skin at my side. The fighting drew me away from him, yet I fought most of the day dragging it behind me. When it hurt me, I put my foot on it, braced myself, and tore it off.”
