and we heard a horseman cry, “Advance, Ḥayzūm!” My cousin’s heart failed him and he died where he stood, while I myself was close to destruction before I finally came round again.
Ibn Isḥāq relates: ʿAbd Allah ibn Abī Bakr told me, from a man of the Banū Sāʿidah, from Abū Usayd Mālik ibn Rabīʿah—who fought at Badr—that after he lost his sight he used to say, “Were I at Badr today and able to see, I would point out to you the very gorge from which the angels emerged; I have no doubt about it whatsoever.”
When the angels descended and Iblīs saw them, Allah revealed to them: “Indeed, I am with you, so make firm those who believe” (al-Anfāl 8:12). Their strengthening consisted in an angel coming to a man in the likeness of someone he knew and saying, “Rejoice! They are nothing; Allah is with you—charge them again!”
But when Iblīs beheld the angels, “he turned on his heels and said, ‘I wash my hands of you; I see what you do not see’” (al-Anfāl 8:48). He had taken on the appearance of Suraqah. Abū Jahl meanwhile was goading his men, shouting, “Do not be unnerved by Suraqah’s withdrawal; he was under a prior arrangement with Muhammad and his companions. By al-Lāt and al-ʿUzzā, we shall not return until we have scattered Muhammad and his followers among the mountains. Do not kill them—capture them alive!”
Al-Wāqidī reports, through Ibn Abī Ḥabībah, from Dāwūd ibn al-Ḥuṣayn, from ʿIkrimah, from Ibn ʿAbbās: the angel would appear in the form of someone they recognised and say, “I have drawn near to them and heard them saying, ‘If they charge us we shall not stand; they are nothing,’ and other such words.” Concerning this Allah says: “When your Lord revealed to the angels, ‘I am with you, so make firm those who believe…’” (al-Anfāl 8:12).
Al-Bayhaqī transmits, by way of Salamah, from ʿUqayl, from Ibn Shihāb, from Abū Ḥāzim, from Sahl ibn Saʿd: Abū Usayd, after he had lost his sight, said, “My nephew, by Allah, if you and I were at Badr and Allah then restored my vision, I would show you the very gorge from which the angels emerged upon us, without the slightest doubt or hesitation.”
Al-Bukhārī records, from Ibrāhīm ibn Mūsā, from ʿAbd al-Wahhāb, from Khālid, from ʿIkrimah, from Ibn ʿAbbās, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said on the Day of Badr:
“This is Gabriel, holding the head of his horse, equipped with the instruments of war.”
