The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then rose and, together with those who were with him, marched on until he reached the water closest to the enemy. He dismounted there, ordered the other wells to be stopped up, and built a cistern over the well at which he had encamped. It was filled with water, and their vessels were placed in it.
Some relate that when Ḥubāb ibn al-Munḏir offered his advice to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, an angel descended from heaven while Gabriel stood beside the Prophet. The angel said, “O Muhammad, your Lord sends you His greeting of peace and says to you: the sound opinion is what Ḥubāb has proposed.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ looked toward Gabriel and said, “I do not know every angel, yet he is indeed an angel and not a devil.”
Al-Umawī reports that they halted at the well nearest to the idolaters at midnight, drew from it, and filled their reservoirs until morning, leaving the idolaters without water.
Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Bakr told me that Saʿd ibn Muʿādh said, “O Prophet of Allah, shall we not build you a shelter in which you may remain while we prepare mounts for you? Then we will confront our enemy. If Allah strengthens us and grants us victory, that is what we desire; but if the outcome is otherwise, you can ride to our people who are behind us. There are men who have stayed back who love you no less than we do; had they thought you would meet in battle, they would not have stayed behind. Allah will protect you through them; they will support you and fight at your side.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ praised him, invoked good for him, and a shelter was erected for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, in which he stayed.
Ibn Isḥāq also said: Quraysh broke camp at dawn and advanced. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw them descending from al-ʿAqanqal—the sand-hill from which they entered the valley—he prayed, “O Allah, here is Quraysh advancing in its arrogance and pride, defying You and denying Your Messenger. O Allah, grant me the victory You promised me; O Allah, destroy them this morning.”
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ also said, when he saw ʿUtbah ibn Rabīʿah among the people, riding a red camel, “If any good is to be found among these people, it is with the rider of the red camel. If they obey him, they will be rightly guided.”
It was further related that Khifāf ibn ʿĪmāʾ ibn Raḥḍah— or his father ʿĪmāʾ ibn Raḥḍah al-Ghifārī—had sent Quraysh his son with some she-camels as a gift, saying, “If you wish us to reinforce you with weapons and men, we will do so.” They replied through his son, “You have upheld the ties of kinship and fulfilled your duty. By my life, were we fighting mere men, we would not be weak before them; but if we are fighting Allah, as Muhammad claims, no one has any power against Allah.”
