Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

Mujāhid said: “He sent rain down upon them; it settled the dust, packed the ground, lifted their spirits, and steadied their feet.”

I say: The night of Badr was Friday night, the seventeenth of Ramaḍān in the second year after the Hijrah. That night the Messenger of Allah ﷺ spent the whole time praying beside the stump of a tree, and in his prostration he repeatedly implored, “O Ever-Living, O Sustainer,” invoking it over and over with fervor.

Ibn Isḥāq said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ hurried ahead of the enemy to reach the water, and when he arrived at the nearest well of Badr he encamped there.

Ibn Isḥāq also related: I was told by men of the Banū Salamah that al-Ḥubāb ibn al-Munḏir ibn al-Jamūḥ said, “Messenger of Allah, this spot where we have stopped—did Allah command you to camp here so that we may neither advance nor fall back, or is it merely strategy, warfare, and planning?” He replied, “It is strategy, warfare, and planning.” Al-Ḥubāb said, “Messenger of Allah, then this is not the place. Lead the people on until we reach the well closest to the enemy; we will camp there, stop up the wells behind it, build a cistern over the well we occupy, fill it with water, and then fight the people so that we drink and they do not.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “You have given sound counsel.”

Al-Umawī reported: My father narrated to us. He said that al-Kalbī, on the authority of Abū Ṣāliḥ, from Ibn ʿAbbās, claimed: While the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was arranging the ranks and Gabriel stood at his right, an angel came to him and said, “O Muḥammad, Allah conveys to you the greeting of peace.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, “He is Peace, from Him comes peace, and to Him peace returns.” The angel then said, “Allah says to you: the plan is exactly what al-Ḥubāb ibn al-Munḏir advised.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, “O Gabriel, do you know this angel?” He answered, “Not every inhabitant of heaven do I know, but he is truthful and he is no devil.”

(1) Al-Tabari reports it in his Tafsir (vol. 9, p. 196). (2) It is narrated by al-Nasa’i in al-Sunan al-Kubra (no. 10447) and by al-Hakim in al-Mustadrak (vol. 1, p. 222) from the hadith of Ali; its isnad is weak. (3) See al-Sirah al-Nabawiyyah by Ibn Hisham (vol. 1, p. 620). (4) See al-Sirah al-Nabawiyyah by Ibn Hisham (vol. 1, p. 620) and Tarikh al-Tabari (vol. 2, p. 440); its isnad is weak due to the unknown intermediary between Ibn Ishaq and the transmitters among Banu Salama. Al-Hakim also included it in al-Mustadrak (vol. 3, pp. 426–427) from al-Hubbab’s narration, though its chain contains unidentified narrators. Al-Dhahabi judged it a rejected (munkar) hadith and remained silent on its isnad—perhaps implying it was “wahin” (feeble). It was also transmitted by al-‘Umwi from Ibn Abbas in al-Bidayah (vol. 5, p. 82) through al-Kalbi, who is a liar. (5) Abū Dharr al-Khushni notes that when the verb is rendered with ghayn mamduda (the expanded ghain), it means “we remove it and bury it,” whereas with ayn mahmula (the unaccented ʿayn)—as in al-Tabari’s reading—it means “we spoil it.” See Sharh Gharib al-Sirah (vol. 2, p. 35). (6) Qulub is the plural of qalib, denoting a well before it is lined (tuwa) with stones; once lined it is called tawiyy. See Lisan al-Arab, s.v. qalb. (7) The author included it briefly in his Tafsir (vol. 3, p. 564).
