Al-Bukhārī reports in the chapter “The Beginning of Creation”:
Musaddad narrated to us; ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn al-Mukhtār narrated to us; ʿAbd Allāh al-Dānaj narrated to us; Abū Salamah related to me, from Abū Hurayrah, from the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—who said:
“The sun and the moon will be rolled up on the Day of Resurrection.”
Al-Bukhārī alone transmitted this report.
Al-Ḥāfiẓ Abū Bakr al-Bazzār related it with a fuller wording. He said:
Ibrāhīm ibn Ziyād al-Baghdādī narrated to us; Yūnus ibn Muḥammad narrated to us; ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn al-Mukhtār narrated to us, from ʿAbd Allāh al-Dānaj, who said: I heard Abū Salamah ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, during the governorship of Khālid ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Qasrī, in this very mosque—the mosque of Kūfah—while al-Ḥasan came and sat beside him as he was narrating. He said:
Abū Hurayrah related to us that the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—said:
“On the Day of Resurrection the sun and the moon will be two bulls in the Fire.”
Al-Ḥasan exclaimed, “What sin have they committed?”
He replied, “I am narrating to you from the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—and you ask, ‘What sin have they committed?’”
Al-Bazzār then remarked: “This ḥadīth is not reported from Abū Hurayrah except through this chain, and ʿAbd Allāh al-Dānaj has transmitted nothing from Abū Salamah other than this report.”
Al-Ḥāfiẓ Abū Yaʿlā al-Mawṣilī also recorded—from the route of Zayd al-Ruqāshī, who is weak—from Anas, that the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—said:
“The sun and the moon will be two hamstrung bulls in the Fire.”
Ibn Abī Ḥātim related: Abū Saʿīd al-Ashajj and ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Awdi both narrated to us, saying: Abū Usāmah narrated to us, from Mujālid, from a shaykh of Bajīlah, from Ibn ʿAbbās regarding the verse, “When the sun is folded up” (al-Takwīr 81:1). He said, “Allah will roll up the sun, the moon, and the stars on the Day of Resurrection and cast them into the sea; then Allah will send a west wind, and it will set them ablaze.”
These reports make it clear that the sun and the moon are among Allah’s creatures: He created them when He willed, and He will deal with them as He wills. His proof is conclusive and His wisdom perfect. He is not to be questioned about what He does, because of His knowledge, wisdom, power, and all-encompassing will; His decree cannot be repelled, resisted, or overcome.
How excellent are the lines Imam Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq ibn Yasār cites at the very beginning of his Sīrah—verses ascribed to Zayd ibn ʿAmr ibn Nufayl on the creation of the heavens and the earth, the sun and the moon, and other marvels. Ibn Hishām held that they are actually the work of Umayyah ibn Abī al-Ṣalt—
(from the ṭawīl metre).
