Ibn Hishām reports: Ibn Jurayj told me that ʿAṭāʾ said, “I heard ʿUbayd ibn ʿUmayr say: The Prophet ﷺ and his Companions consulted one another about using a nāqūs—a wooden clapper—to gather the people for prayer. While ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb was on his way to purchase two pieces of wood for the clapper, he saw in a dream: ‘Do not adopt the nāqūs; rather, give the adhān for the prayer.’ ʿUmar hurried to the Prophet ﷺ to tell him of the dream, only to find that revelation had already reached the Prophet ﷺ on the matter, and Bilāl was standing there calling the adhān. When ʿUmar related what he had seen, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘Revelation has preceded you in this.’ This shows that revelation came to affirm what ʿAbd Allāh ibn Zayd ibn ʿAbd Rabbih had seen, as some scholars have explicitly stated. Allah, exalted is He, knows best.
Ibn Isḥāq relates: Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar ibn al-Zubayr told me, from ʿUrwah ibn al-Zubayr, from a woman of Banū al-Najjār, who said: “My house was one of the tallest houses surrounding the mosque. Bilāl used to climb onto it every morning to give the adhān for Fajr. He would arrive in the last part of the night, sit on the roof, and wait for dawn. When he sighted it he would stretch and say, ‘O Allah, I praise You and seek Your help against Quraysh so that they may uphold Your religion.’ He would then give the adhān. By Allah, to my knowledge he never omitted these words even for a single night.” Abū Dāwūd records this report in his Sunan as the sole transmitter.

Ibn Jarīr states: al-Wāqidī claims that in this same year, in Ramaḍān—seven months after the Hijrah—the Messenger of Allah ﷺ conferred a white banner upon Ḥamzah ibn ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, placing him in command of thirty Emigrants with orders to intercept the Quraysh caravans. Ḥamzah met Abū Jahl, who was leading three hundred men of Quraysh, but Majdī ibn ʿAmr intervened and no fighting took place. He adds: The standard-bearer for Ḥamzah was Abū Marthad al-Ghanawī.
