Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah; come to prayer, come to prayer; come to success, come to success; Allah is greatest, Allah is greatest; there is no god but Allah.
When he related this to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, the Prophet said, “Indeed, it is a true dream, if Allah so wills. Go with Bilāl, teach it to him, and let him give the call to prayer with it, for his voice carries farther than yours.”
When Bilāl proclaimed the adhān with those words, ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb heard him while still in his house. Dragging his cloak, he rushed to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and exclaimed, “O Prophet of Allah, by the One Who sent you with the truth, I have seen what he saw!” The Messenger of Allah replied, “All praise belongs to Allah.”
Ibn Isḥāq said: Muḥammad ibn Ibrāhīm ibn al-Ḥārith narrated this ḥadīth to me from Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Zayd ibn Thaʿlabah ibn ʿAbd Rabbih, from his father.
This report was also transmitted by Abū Dāwūd, al-Tirmidhī, Ibn Mājah, and Ibn Khuzaymah through several chains from Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq, and it was declared sound by al-Tirmidhī, Ibn Khuzaymah, and others.
Abū Dāwūd’s version further states that the Prophet taught him the wording of the iqāmah, saying: “When you stand to establish the prayer, say: Allah is greatest, Allah is greatest; I testify that there is no god but Allah, I testify that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah; come to prayer, come to success; the prayer has begun, the prayer has begun; Allah is greatest, Allah is greatest; there is no god but Allah.”
Ibn Mājah likewise reported this ḥadīth from Abū ʿUbayd Muḥammad ibn ʿUbayd ibn Maymūn, through Muḥammad ibn Salamah al-Ḥarrānī, from Ibn Isḥāq as cited above. He added: Abū ʿUbayd said, “Abū Bakr al-Ḥakamī informed me that ʿAbd Allāh ibn Zayd al-Anṣārī composed the following lines on the matter:
I praise Allah, Lord of majesty and honor,
With abundant praise for the gift of the adhān;
A herald from Allah brought it to me—
How noble a herald he proved to be!
For three successive nights he came,
And each time my reverence only grew.”
