Imam Aḥmad said (1): “ʿAffān narrated to us; Ḥammād ibn Salamah narrated to us; ʿĀṣim al-Aḥwal narrated to us from Anas ibn Mālik, who said:
‘The Messenger of Allah ﷺ established a bond of brotherhood between the Emigrants (Muhājirūn) and the Helpers (Anṣār) in the house of Anas ibn Mālik.’”
Imam Aḥmad, al-Bukhārī, Muslim, and Abū Dāwūd have likewise transmitted the report (2) through several chains from ʿĀṣim ibn Sulaymān al-Aḥwal, from Anas ibn Mālik, who said:
‘The Messenger of Allah ﷺ established a pact of brotherhood between Quraysh and the Helpers in my house.’
Imam Aḥmad also said (3): “Naṣr ibn Bāb narrated to us, from Ḥajjāj—meaning Ibn Arṭāh—who said; and Surayj narrated to us, ʿAbbād narrated to us, from Ḥajjāj, from ʿAmr ibn Shuʿayb, from his father, from his grandfather, that the Prophet ﷺ wrote a document between the Emigrants and the Helpers stipulating that they should jointly assume their blood-money liabilities (4), ransom their captives in a recognized and equitable manner, and work for reconciliation among the Muslims.”
Aḥmad added: “Surayj likewise narrated to us; ʿAbbād narrated to us, from Ḥajjāj, from al-Ḥakam, from Miqsam (5), from Ibn ʿAbbās with the same wording.” This wording is unique to Imam Aḥmad.
In Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim (6) it is related from Jābir that: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ imposed on every clan its share of blood-money (7).”
Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq recorded (8) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ wrote a document between the Emigrants and the Helpers, entered into a truce with the Jews, and concluded a covenant with them, confirming them upon their religion and their property, stipulating upon them and for them:
In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate.
“This is a document from Muḥammad, the Prophet ﷺ (9), between the believers and Muslims of Quraysh and Yathrib, and those who follow them, join them, and strive alongside them: that they are one community to the exclusion of all other people.
The Emigrants from Quraysh shall remain upon their established practice; they shall share the payment of blood-money among themselves and ransom their captives with fairness and justice.
The Banū ʿAwf shall remain upon their established practice, jointly paying their former blood-money, and every group shall ransom its captives with goodness and equity among the believers.”
