ʿAbd al-Razzāq (1) reported: Maʿmar narrated to us from al-Ḥasan (2), who relates from his mother, from Umm Salamah, who said:
When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his Companions were building the mosque, each Companion would carry a single brick, whereas ʿAmmār carried two—one on his own behalf and one on behalf of the Prophet ﷺ. The Prophet ﷺ wiped the dust from his back (3) and said, “Son of Sumayyah, people will receive one reward, but you will receive two. Your last provision in this world will be a drink of milk, and the rebellious faction will kill you.” This chain of transmission satisfies the conditions of the two Ṣaḥīḥs (4).
Al-Bayhaqī (5) and others also cite the report through several transmitters from Khālid al-Ḥadhdhāʾ, from ʿIkrimah, from Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī, who said: We were carrying one brick at a time while constructing the mosque, but ʿAmmār would carry two. The Prophet ﷺ saw him, began brushing the dust from him, and said:
“Alas for ʿAmmār! The rebellious faction will kill him. He invites them to Paradise, while they invite him to the Fire.”
Abū Saʿīd added: ʿAmmār used to say, “I seek refuge with Allah from ordeals.”
However, Imām al-Bukhārī (6) related this ḥadīth—from Musaddad, from ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn al-Mukhtār, from Khālid al-Ḥadhdhāʾ; and from Ibrāhīm ibn Mūsā, from ʿAbd al-Wahhāb al-Thaqafī, from Khālid al-Ḥadhdhāʾ—without including the Prophet’s words, “The rebellious faction will kill you” (7).
(1) In al-Musannaf (no. 20426), chapter “Aṣḥāb al-Nabī” (The Companions of the Prophet ﷺ).
(2) In al-Musannaf: “Muʿammar from one who heard al-Ḥasan narrate.” Al-Bashshar corrected it to “Muʿammar upon one who heard al-Ḥasan relate [it],” since Muʿammar never actually narrated from al-Ḥasan.
(3) In al-Musannaf: “Then the Prophet ﷺ stood up and wiped his back.”
(4) How can this meet the condition of the two Shāykhs? If al-Musannaf’s wording is correct, then Muʿammar did not narrate from al-Ḥasan; he only saw al-Ḥasan’s funeral as a child and reported that he sought knowledge in the year al-Ḥasan died (as recorded from ʿAbd al-Razzaq in Tārīkh al-Bukhārī al-Ṣaghīr 2/115 and al-Jarḥ wa-l-Taʿdīl 8/1165). No other works on ʿilm report him narrating from al-Ḥasan, nor does al-Mizzī mention it in al-Tahdhīb. If instead the wording in ʿAbd al-Razzaq’s Musannaf is correct, then there must be an unknown intermediary between them—which is more likely—and this chain is invalid due to the narrator’s unknown status. (5) In Dalāʾil al-Nubuwwa (2/546).
(6) In Fatḥ al-Bārī: at 447 in the Book of Prayer, chapter “Cooperation in Building the Mosque,” and at 2812 in the Book of Jihād, chapter “Wiping the ghār over the head in the path of Allah.”
(7) This is correct. Al-Mizzī records this hadith without the phrase “taqtuluhu al-fay’a al-bāghiya” (“the rebellious group kills him”) (Tuhfat al-Ashrāf 3/415, ḥadīth 4248 in my edition). Al-Bayhaqī also states in Dalāʾil that al-Bukhārī omitted it. Its presence in the printed editions of al-Fatḥ at both 447 and 2812 is due to editorial insertion by the publishers, which was ill-advised. In the Yūnānī manuscript of Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, a marginal note marks “lā” at the start and “ilā” at the end of this phrase—i.e., “delete this phrase.” Hence, it appears to be an interpolation from certain reports, while the reliable, original transmissions omit it. Al-Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Ḥajar comments in Fatḥ al-Bārī (1/542): “Know that al-Ḥumaydī did not mention this addition in his compilation and said that al-Bukhārī never included it; Abū Masʿūd al-Dimashqī said the same. Al-Ḥumaydī observed that it may never have reached al-Bukhārī or that he deliberately omitted it; it was, however, narrated by al-Ismāʿīlī and al-Barqānī. I say: It appears that al-Bukhārī omitted it intentionally, due to a subtle point—namely, that Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī admitted he never heard this addition from the Prophet ﷺ, which indicates that it was among these [reports].”
