Abū Nuʿaym (1) also transmitted the report through several chains from Mukram ibn Muḥriz al-Kaʿbī al-Khuzāʿī (2), from his father Muḥriz ibn Mahdī, from Ḥizām ibn Hishām ibn Ḥubaysh ibn Khālid, from his father, from his grandfather Ḥubaysh ibn Khālid—the Companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ—stating that when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ departed from Mecca on the Hijrah he left with Abū Bakr and ʿĀmir ibn Fuhayrah, their guide being ʿAbd Allāh ibn Urayqiṭ al-Laythī. They passed by the two tents of Umm Maʿbad, a sturdy, mature woman who was sitting cross-legged at the entrance of her pavilion, and he narrated the incident exactly as previously stated.
He said: It was likewise related to us (5)—so far as I recall—by Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad ibn ʿAlī ibn Makhlad. Muḥammad ibn Yūnus ibn Mūsā, meaning al-Kudaymī, narrated to us; ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Yaḥyā ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz, the client of al-ʿAbbās ibn ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn Sulaymān ibn Salīṭ al-Anṣārī narrated to us; my father told me, from his father Salīṭ al-Badri, who said:
When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ set out on the Hijrah accompanied by Abū Bakr, ʿĀmir ibn Fuhayrah, and Ibn Urayqiṭ guiding them along the way, they passed by Umm Maʿbad al-Khuzaʿīyah, who did not recognize him. He said to her,
“O Umm Maʿbad, do you have any milk?”
She replied, “No, by Allah, the flock is away at pasture.”
He asked, “Then what about this ewe?”
She said, “Weariness has kept her back from the herd.”
He then related the rest of the story in wording similar to what has already been given.
Al-Bayhaqī (6) said: It is possible that all these narratives concern the very same event.
He next cited an account resembling the story of Umm Maʿbad’s ewe, saying (7): Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥāfiẓ dictated to us; Abū Bakr Aḥmad ibn Isḥāq ibn Ayyūb related to us; Muḥammad ibn Ghālib informed us; Abū al-Walīd narrated to us; ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Iyād ibn Laqīṭ related to us; Iyād ibn Laqīṭ narrated from Qays ibn al-Nuʿmān, who said:
When the Prophet ﷺ and Abū Bakr set out in secrecy, they came upon a slave herding sheep. They asked him for milk, and he said, “I have no sheep that can be milked except this young she-goat. She conceived at the beginning of winter but has miscarried (9) and no milk remains.”
He said, “Bring her here.” So he brought her, and the Prophet ﷺ restrained her and passed his hand over her
