Al-Ḥuṣayn(1) and his son Marthad, both of the Ghani tribe and confederates of Ḥamzah, together with Anasah and Abū Kabshah—the two freedmen of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ—lodged with Kulthūm ibn al-Hidam, a clansman of Banū ʿAmr ibn ʿAwf, in Qubāʾ. Another report says they stayed with Saʿd ibn Khaythamah, while a third states that Ḥamzah himself lodged with Asʿad ibn Zurārah. Allah knows best.(2)
He also said: ʿUbaydah ibn al-Ḥārith and his two brothers al-Ṭufayl and Ḥuṣayn; Misṭaḥ ibn Uthāthah; Suwaybiṭ ibn Saʿd ibn Ḥuraymilah of Banū ʿAbd al-Dār; Ṭulayb ibn ʿUmayr of Banū ʿAbd ibn Quṣayy; and Khabbāb, the freedman of ʿUtbah ibn Ghazwān, were hosted by ʿAbd Allāh ibn Salamah, a clansman of Balʿajlān, in Qubāʾ.
ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAwf, along with a number of the Emigrants, stayed with Saʿd ibn al-Rabīʿ. Al-Zubayr ibn al-ʿAwwām and Abū Sabrah ibn Abī Ruhm were lodged by Mundhir ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿUqbah ibn Uḥayḥah ibn al-Julāḥ in al-ʿUṣbah, the quarter of Banū Jaḥjaba. Muṣʿab ibn ʿUmayr was the guest of Saʿd ibn Muʿādh, while Abū Ḥudhayfah ibn ʿUtbah and his freedman Sālim stayed with Salamah.
Ibn Isḥāq(3) said—and al-Umawī maintains—that they actually lodged with Khubayb ibn Isāf, a clansman of Banū Ḥārithah.
ʿUtbah ibn Ghazwān was hosted by ʿAbbād ibn Bishr ibn Waqsh among the Banū ʿAbd al-Ashhal; ʿUthmān ibn ʿAffān stayed with Aws ibn Thābit ibn al-Mundhir, brother of Ḥassān ibn Thābit, in the district of Banū al-Najjār.
Ibn Isḥāq(4) further states: “The bachelors among the Emigrants lodged with Saʿd ibn Khaythamah, for he himself was a bachelor.” Allah knows best which of these reports is correct.
Yaʿqūb ibn Sufyān(5) relates—through his chain—from Ibn ʿUmar, who said: “When we arrived from Mecca we settled in al-ʿUṣbah. ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb, Abū ʿUbaydah ibn al-Jarrāḥ, and Sālim, the freedman of Abū Ḥudhayfah, also stayed there, and Sālim led them in prayer because he had memorised more of the Qurʾān than any of them.”
Section: The reason for the Messenger of Allah’s ﷺ own emigration
Allah the Exalted says:
“Say: ‘My Lord, cause me to enter with a true entrance and to exit with a true exit, and grant me from Yourself a supporting authority.’” (al-Isrāʾ 17:80)
Thus Allah guided and inspired him to make this supplication, asking that He grant him swift relief and a way out of his predicament.
