Saʿd ibn Layth; they lodged with Rafāʿah ibn ʿAbd al-Mundhir ibn Zanbar(1) among the Banū ʿAmr ibn ʿAwf in Qubāʾ.
Ibn Isḥāq(2) said: “The Emigrants ﷺ then began to arrive in quick succession. Ṭalḥah ibn ʿUbayd Allāh and Ṣuhayb ibn Sinān stayed with Khubayb ibn Isāf, a kinsman of Banū al-Ḥārith ibn al-Khazraj, in the district of al-Sunḥ.(3) Others say that Ṭalḥah in fact lodged with Asʿad ibn Zurārah.”
Ibn Hishām(4) said: “I was told by Abū ʿUthmān al-Nahdī that when Ṣuhayb set out to emigrate, the pagan Quraysh said to him, ‘You came to us a destitute pauper; here your wealth has grown until you hold the position you do, and now you want to leave with your wealth and your own self? By Allah, that will never happen!’
Ṣuhayb replied, ‘Suppose I give you my wealth—will you let me go?’
They said, ‘Yes.’
He said, ‘I have handed my wealth over to you.’
When this reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ he said,
‘Ṣuhayb has made a profitable bargain! Ṣuhayb has made a profitable bargain!’ ”
Al-Ḥāfiẓ al-Bayhaqī(5) reported: “Al-Ḥāfiẓ Abū ʿAbd Allāh dictated to us; Abū al-ʿAbbās Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad ibn Mīkāl informed us; ʿAbdān al-Ahwāzī narrated to us; Zayd ibn al-Ḥarīsh(6) narrated to us; Yaʿqūb ibn Muḥammad al-Zuhrī narrated to us; Ḥuṣayn ibn Ḥudhayfah ibn Ṣayfī ibn Ṣuhayb narrated to me—my father and my paternal uncles also narrating—from Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyab, from Ṣuhayb, who said:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said,
‘I was shown the land of your emigration: a saline tract lying between two lava fields. It will be either Hajar or Yathrib.’
Ṣuhayb continued: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ set out for Madinah and Abū Bakr went with him. I had resolved to accompany him, but some youths of Quraysh prevented me. I spent that night standing in prayer, never sitting down; they said, ‘Allah has occupied him with a stomach ailment’—though I was not ill—and they went to sleep. I slipped away, but after I had travelled about a barīd(8) they caught up with me to bring me back.
I said, ‘How would it be if I gave you gold pieces(9) and you let me go, on the condition that you keep faith?’ They agreed. I then accompanied them(10) back to Mecca and said, ‘Dig beneath the threshold of the door; there you will find the gold pieces. Then go to So-and-so and take the two garments.’ I travelled on until I reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at Qubāʾ before he had departed from it.
When he saw me he said,
‘O Abū Yaḥyā, the bargain has paid off!’—three times.
I said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, no one preceded me to you, and only Gabriel(AS) informed you.’ ”
Ibn Isḥāq(11) added: “Ḥamzah ibn ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, Zayd ibn Ḥārithah, and Abū Marthad Kannāz ibn …”
