Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

“…ruin for ruin. I am of you and you are of me; I shall fight whomever you fight and make peace with whomever you make peace.”

Kaʿb then related: The Messenger of God ﷺ said, “Bring forth from among you twelve deputies who will be responsible for their people.” They therefore appointed twelve deputies—nine from the Khazraj and three from the Aws.

Ibn Isḥāq states that they were: Abū Umāmah Asʿad ibn Zurārah (mentioned earlier); Saʿd ibn ar-Rabīʿ ibn ʿAmr ibn Abī Zuhayr ibn Mālik ibn Imruʾ al-Qays ibn Mālik ibn Thaʿlabah ibn Kaʿb ibn al-Khazraj ibn al-Ḥārith ibn al-Khazraj; ʿAbd Allāh ibn Rawāḥah ibn Imruʾ al-Qays ibn Mālik ibn Thaʿlabah ibn Kaʿb ibn al-Khazraj ibn al-Ḥārith ibn al-Khazraj; Rāfiʿ ibn Mālik ibn al-ʿAjlān (previously mentioned); al-Barāʾ ibn Maʿrūr ibn Ṣakhr ibn Khansāʾ ibn Sinān ibn ʿUbayd ibn ʿAdī ibn Ghanm ibn Kaʿb ibn Salamah ibn Saʿd ibn ʿAlī ibn Asad ibn Sāridah ibn Tayzīd ibn Jusham ibn al-Khazraj; ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr ibn Ḥarām ibn Thaʿlabah ibn Ḥarām ibn Kaʿb ibn Ghanm ibn Kaʿb ibn Salamah; ʿUbādah ibn aṣ-Ṣāmit (mentioned earlier); Saʿd ibn ʿUbādah ibn Dulaym ibn Ḥārithah ibn Ḥazīmah ibn Thaʿlabah ibn Ṭarīf ibn al-Khazraj ibn Sāʿidah ibn Kaʿb ibn al-Khazraj; and al-Munḏir ibn ʿAmr ibn Khunays ibn Ḥārithah ibn Lawdhān ibn ʿAbd Wudd ibn Zayd ibn Thaʿlabah ibn al-Khazraj ibn Sāʿidah ibn Kaʿb ibn al-Khazraj.

These nine were of the Khazraj.

The three from the Aws were: Usayd ibn Ḥuḍayr ibn Samāk ibn ʿAtīq ibn Rāfiʿ ibn Imruʾ al-Qays ibn Zayd ibn ʿAbd al-Ashhal ibn Jusham ibn al-Khazraj ibn ʿAmr ibn Mālik ibn al-Aws; Saʿd ibn Khaythamah ibn al-Ḥārith ibn Mālik ibn Kaʿb ibn an-Nakhāṭ ibn Kaʿb ibn Ḥārithah ibn Ghanm ibn as-Salm ibn Imruʾ al-Qays ibn Mālik ibn al-Aws; and Rafāʿah ibn ʿAbd al-Munḏir ibn Zanbar ibn Zayd ibn Umayyah ibn Zayd ibn Mālik ibn ʿAwf ibn ʿAmr ibn ʿAwf ibn Mālik ibn al-Aws.

(1) “al-hadm”: It is recorded both with a silent dāl and with a fatḥa on the dāl. As al-hadam (with fatḥa) it means “the grave,” i.e. “I will be buried where you are buried,” or—as in the other hadith—al-mahya mahyakum wa al-mamat mamātukum (“my living is your living and my dying is your dying”), meaning “I will not part from you.” As al-hadm (with a silent dāl and fatḥa) it also denotes the shedding of a slain person’s blood; Arabs say damāhum banīhum hadm, meaning “their blood is shed.” The sense is: “If your blood is demanded, my blood is demanded; and if your blood is shed, my blood is shed,” to reinforce the bond between us. This proverb was well known among the Arabs: damī damuk wa-hadmī hadmak, used in treaties and alliances. References: Nihāyah by Ibn al-Athīr (vol. 5, p. 251) and al-Rawd al-Unūf (vol. 2, p. 202). (4) In the Khuzaymah edition this is a scribal error. The correct reading, attested in manuscript Ḥ, Sīrat Ibn Hishām, Sharḥ al-Sīrah by Abū Dharr, and al-Ikmāl (vol. 3, p. 141), is spelled with an initial ḥā’ (with fatḥa), then zāy (with kasra). It reads: “Abū Thābit is one of the seventy who gave allegiance to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) on the night of al-ʿAqabah, and one of the pure twelve.” (5) In the Zāhirah edition it appears as Zanīr, and in Sīrat Ibn Hishām and al-Rawd al-Unūf as Zubayr. Both are scribal errors. The correct form, found in manuscript Ḥ and al-Ikmāl (vol. 4, p. 167), is Zanbar (with fatḥa on the zāy, then nūn with sukun, then bā’ with fatḥa).
