for what he had done, yet he insisted on continuing in that way.
When we reached Mecca he said to me, “Nephew, come with me to the Messenger of God ﷺ so that I may ask him about what I have done on this journey. Something has troubled my heart after I saw you differing with me about it.”
We therefore went out searching for the Messenger of God ﷺ, though we did not know him and had never seen him before. We met a man from Mecca and asked him about the Messenger of God ﷺ. He replied, “Do you know him?” We said, “No.” He asked, “Do you know al-‘Abbās ibn ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, his uncle?” We answered, “Yes”—for we knew al-‘Abbās; he used to visit us frequently as a merchant. The man said, “When you enter the mosque, he is the man sitting with al-‘Abbās.”
We entered the mosque and found al-‘Abbās seated, with the Messenger of God ﷺ sitting beside him. We offered the greeting of peace and then sat down. The Messenger of God ﷺ said to al-‘Abbās, “Abū l-Faḍl, do you know these two men?” He replied, “Yes. This is al-Barāʾ ibn Maʿrūr, the leader of his people, and this is Kaʿb ibn Mālik.” By God, I shall never forget the Prophet’s words: “The poet?” I answered, “Yes.”
Al-Barāʾ ibn Maʿrūr then said to him, “O Prophet of God, on this journey God guided me to Islam. I thought it unseemly to leave this Sacred House behind my back, so I prayed facing it, although my companions opposed me. A misgiving has remained in my breast because of their disagreement with me. What do you think, O Messenger of God?”
He replied, “You had a qiblah; had you but remained patient upon it.” Al-Barāʾ therefore returned to the qiblah of the Messenger of God ﷺ and thereafter prayed with us facing Syria.
His family claim that he continued to pray toward the Kaʿbah until he died, but that is not so; we know him better than they do.
Kaʿb ibn Mālik continues: We then set out for the Hajj, having appointed with the Messenger of God ﷺ to meet at al-ʿAqabah in the middle of the Days of Tashrīq. When we had completed the rites of Hajj, and the night came on which the Messenger of God ﷺ had fixed for us (1), we had with us ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr ibn Ḥarām—Abū Jābir—one of our chiefs. We had brought him along while concealing our affair from the idolaters among our own people.
We spoke to him, saying, “Abū Jābir, you are a leader among us, a noble of our notables. We would hate to see you tomorrow as fuel for the Fire. ” We then invited him to Islam and informed him of the Messenger of God’s ﷺ appointment with us at al-ʿAqabah. He embraced Islam, attended al-ʿAqabah with us, and was made a naqīb.
Al-Bukhārī (2) transmitted: Ibrāhīm related to us—Hishām narrated—that Ibn Jurayj informed them, saying that ʿAṭāʾ reported from Jābir: “My father, my uncle, and I were among the Companions of al-ʿAqabah.” ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad said that Ibn ʿUyaynah commented: one of them was al-Barāʾ ibn Maʿrūr (3).
