Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

I commend you to God—so be righteous and God-fearing,
and safeguard your honor; for devotion to God comes first.

Should your people rise to leadership, do not envy them;
and if authority rests with you, then rule with justice.

If a grave calamity befalls your clan,
make your own lives a shield before the tribe.

When a crushing debt weighs upon them, treat them gently;
whatever load they place on you in misfortune, bear it.

If poverty overtakes you, maintain your dignity;
and if you possess an abundance of good, be generous with it.

Abū Qays also said:

Glorify God at the break of every morning,
when His sun rises and at each new crescent.

He knows what is hidden and what is manifest;
none of our Lord’s words are in error.

His are the birds that dart and return,
nesting in the secure crags of the mountains;

His, too, the wild beasts of the wasteland—
you see them in the hollows and shaded sands.

For His sake the Jews embraced Judaism,
and every creed submits, fearing a ruinous affliction;

for His sake the Christians cross themselves and stand
at every festival, celebrating their Lord;

for His sake you see the cloistered monk,
pledged to hardship after a life of ease.

O my children, do not sever the bonds of kinship;
keep them intact—whether the ties be near or distant.

Be mindful of God regarding the weak among the orphans,
and beware of any device that turns the unlawful into the lawful.

Know that every orphan has a Guardian,
all-knowing, guided without being asked.

Therefore, do not consume the orphan’s wealth;
for the orphan’s property is watched over by a vigilant Custodian.

(1) In the Ṭ edition it reads “ama’aztum,” and in the Sīra “amar’atum.” The unmarked form bara’ means “you became impoverished,” and the reading preserved in the Ḥ recension conveys the same sense. (2) “tastareed” means “to search for grazing grounds.” See al-Qamus under kalaa (fodder). (3) “al-haqaf” is the plural of haqf, meaning a sand dune or ridge. See al-Qamus s.v. haqf. (4) “shammas an-nasara” refers to the practice of the shammasiyyah (monks) who brand or scorch themselves, believing this disciplines the soul. (al-Rawd al-Anf, 2:288) (5) In the Ṭ edition: an’am. The reading is confirmed in the Ḥ recension and in Ibn Hisham’s Sīra. (6) The phrase “qasirah min tuwal” (“short compared to tall”) allows two readings. One: it exhorts maintaining kinship even if her stature is modest—i.e. be “tall” in generosity and kindness—as in the hadith: “The one whose hand is longest in generosity will be the first to join me,” said of Zaynab bint Jahsh. The other reads it as praise: although their lineage is “short,” they descend from a “tall” tribe, as in the verse: “I love among women every tall one… whose lineage among the righteous is short.” (al-Rawd al-Anf, 2:288) (7) In the Sīra it appears as rubbama (“perhaps”), which seems more appropriate.
