He said:
We then proceeded to the gathering-place of the Aws and the Khazraj, and we had not risen before they had already pledged allegiance to the Prophet ﷺ.
ʿAlī—may Allah be pleased with him—said:
They were men of truth and steadfastness, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was delighted, seeing how well Abū Bakr —may Allah be pleased with him—knew their genealogies.
He (the narrator) continued:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not remain long before he came out to his Companions and said, “Pray for your brothers of Rabīʿah, for today the Persians have surrounded them.” He then went back into his house, but soon returned and said,
“Praise Allah in abundance, for today the sons of Rabīʿah have prevailed over the Persians: they killed their kings, overran their camp, and by me they were granted victory.”
He added:
The battle occurred at Qurāqir, beside Dhū Qār, and concerning it al-Aʿshā recited:
May my camel—and the rider upon her—be ransomed for the sons of Dhuhl ibn Shaybān
whenever battle is joined and warriors grow few.
They struck at the flank of Qurāqir with crushing blows,
assailing the vanguard of al-Hamruz until it broke and fled.

This report is exceedingly rare; we have recorded it because it contains proofs of Prophethood, fine morals, noble traits, and the Arabs’ eloquence. It has also reached us through another chain, stating that when they fought the Persians and met them at Qurāqir—a place near the Euphrates—they adopted the name of Muhammad ﷺ as their battle cry, and by it they triumphed over the Persians. They later entered Islam.
Al-Wāqidī said: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Wābṣah al-ʿAbsī related to us, from his father, from his grandfather, who said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to us in our dwellings at Minā while we were camped opposite the first jamrah next to Masjid al-Khayf. He was riding his mount with Zayd ibn Ḥārithah seated behind him. He invited us, but by Allah, we did not respond to him, nor was success allotted to us.
“We had already heard of him and of his summons during the pilgrimage seasons. He stood before us calling us, yet we did not answer him. With us was Maysarah ibn Masrūq al-ʿAbsī, who said, ‘I swear by Allah, if only we had believed this man and taken him with us until we had settled him in the heart of our land, that would have been sound judgment. I swear by Allah, his cause will surely prevail until it reaches every place.’
“The people replied, ‘Leave us alone; do not expose us to what we cannot withstand.’ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ placed his hopes in Maysarah and spoke to him, saying …”
