Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

“For someone else? We have no need of your mission!” They refused him outright.

When the people dispersed after the season, the Banū ʿĀmir returned to an elderly leader of theirs who, because of his age, could no longer accompany them to the gatherings. Each year, when they came back, they would recount to him whatever had occurred. That year, when they reached him, he asked what had taken place during the season. They replied, “A young man from Quraysh—one of the sons of ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib—came to us claiming to be a prophet. He asked us to shelter him, stand with him, and escort him to our homeland.”

The old man placed his hand on his head and cried, “O Banū ʿĀmir, is there any way to repair what has been lost? Can the tail of this affair still be seized? (1) By Him in whose hand is the soul of so-and-so, no Ishmaelite has ever fabricated such words, and it is the truth. Where was your judgment?!” (2)

Mūsā ibn ʿUqbah relates from al-Zuhrī:

Throughout those years the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would present himself to the Arab tribes at every season. He would speak to each tribe’s nobles, asking nothing of them except that they give him refuge and protection, saying,

“I will not compel any of you to anything. Whoever among you is pleased with what I call to, so be it; whoever dislikes it, I will not coerce him. All I desire is that you shield me from being killed, so that I may convey my Lord’s message, until Allah decrees for me and for those with me what He wills.”

Yet none of them accepted him. Whenever he approached a tribe they would say, “A man’s own people know him best. Do you think a man could set us right when his own people have corrupted him and cast him off?” This was among the honours Allah had stored up for the Anṣār. (3)(4)

Al-Ḥāfiẓ Abū Nuʿaym narrates—through ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Ajlaḥ and Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd al-Umawī, both from Muḥammad ibn al-Sāʾib al-Kalbī, from Abū Ṣāliḥ, from Ibn ʿAbbās, from al-ʿAbbās—that al-ʿAbbās said:

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me, “I do not see that either you or your brother can shield me. Will you take me to the market tomorrow so that you can show me where the tribes are encamped?” That market was the great gathering place of the Arabs. (5)(6)

I replied, “Here is Kindah and its allied clans—among the finest of those from Yemen who make pilgrimage to the House. Over there are the encampments of Bakr ibn Wāʾil, and those are the encampments of Banū ʿĀmir ibn Ṣaʿṣaʿah. Choose for yourself.”

He began with Kindah, approached them, and said,

“Who are your people?”

They answered, “We are folk of Yemen.”

He asked, “Which part of Yemen?”

They said, “Kindah.”

He asked, “Which branch of Kindah?”

They replied, “The descendants of ʿAmr ibn Muʿāwiyah.”

He said, “Will you accept something good?”

They asked, “What is it?”

He replied, “That you bear witness there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, that you establish the prayer, and that you believe in what has come from Allah.” (7)

(1) The expression hal laha min talaafin (“Is there any remediation?”) means “to make up for a lapse,” and the phrase hal lidhunabaha min matlab (“Does its tail offer a means of capture?”)—analogous to the proverb duriba li-ma fataha minha—derives from thanaba al-tair (“the bird’s tail”): when a bird escapes the snare, one seeks to catch it by the tail. (al-Rawd, 2:181) (2) i.e. that none of Isma’il’s descendants ever falsely claimed prophethood. (al-Rawd, 2:181) (3) In the manuscript (H), the reading is yusahibuhu (“he accompanies him”); in the margin, yaqbalahu (“he accepts it”). The symbol (kh) above indicates a variant in that copy. (4) Reported by al-Bayhaqi in al-Dalail 2:414 via Musa b. Uqba and by Abu Nuaym in al-Dalail 1:389 via al-Tabarani. (5) This passage does not appear in the printed editions of Dalail al-Nubuwwa; a portion of it will be included in Dalail and noted in its proper place. (6) In the printed text it reads hatta naqarra fi; the manuscript (H) reading is preferred. (7) This phrase does not occur in the manuscript (H).
