Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

and do not do anything else until you return to me.’ So I went, buried him, and came back to the Prophet ﷺ. He then instructed me to bathe, after which he prayed for me with supplications that I would not exchange for everything on the face of the earth.

Al-Ḥāfiẓ al-Bayhaqī said: Abū Saʿd al-Mālinī informed us; Abū Aḥmad ibn ʿAdī related to us; Muḥammad ibn Hārūn ibn Ḥumayd related to us; Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Abī Rizmah related to us; al-Faḍl related to us, from Ibrāhīm ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, from Ibn Jurayj, from ʿAṭāʾ, from Ibn ʿAbbās:

“The Prophet ﷺ accompanied the funeral procession of Abū Ṭālib and said, ‘The bond of kinship has reached you; may you be well rewarded, O uncle.’”

He (al-Bayhaqī) added: It has also been reported from Abū al-Yamān al-Hawzanī as a mursal narration from the Prophet ﷺ with the additional wording, “but he did not stand by the grave.” He then remarked: This Ibrāhīm ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān is al-Khuwārizmī, concerning whom the critics have spoken.

I say: More than one scholar has transmitted from him—among them al-Faḍl ibn Mūsā al-Sīnānī and Muḥammad ibn Salām al-Baykandī—yet Ibn ʿAddas said, “He is unknown, and the ḥadīths he reports from everyone he narrates from are unsound.”

We have already set forth what Abū Ṭālib undertook of defending, arguing for, and protecting the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, shielding him and his Companions, together with the praise and commendation he voiced for him, the affection, love, and compassion he showed to him and to them in the verses of poetry we previously cited. Those poems also contained scorn and disparagement for those who opposed and belied him, all couched in eloquent, incomparable Hāshimite, Muṭṭalibite diction that no Arab could match or challenge. Throughout all of this Abū Ṭālib knew that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was truthful, righteous, and rightly guided, yet faith never entered his heart. Thus he distinguished between mere knowledge of the heart and its actual assent, as we explained in the commentary on the “Book of Faith” in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī.

The proof for this is the Almighty’s words:
“Those to whom We gave the Scripture recognize him as they recognize their own sons, yet a group of them knowingly conceal the truth.” (Q 2:146)

And His words about Pharaoh’s people:
“They denied them, though their own souls were convinced of them, out of wickedness and arrogance.” (Q 27:14)

And Moses’ address to Pharaoh:
“Indeed you know that none has sent down these signs except the Lord of the heavens and the earth as clear proofs. Truly, O Pharaoh, I think you are doomed.” (Q 17:102)

Some of the early scholars said regarding the verse, “They forbid others from him and keep away from him” (Q 6:26), that it was revealed about Abū Ṭālib: he would prevent people from harming the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he himself kept aloof from the guidance and religion of truth brought by the Messenger. It has been related from Ibn ʿAbbās, al-Qāsim ibn—

(1) In the Ḥ and Ṭ manuscripts and in Sunan an-Nasa’i it reads “fawāraytuhu thumma jiʾtu fa-amaranī” (“I buried him, then I came and he ordered me”); in Sunan Abī Dāwūd it appears as “fa-dhahabtu fawāraytuhu wa jiʾtuhu fa-amaranī” (“so I went and buried him, then I came to him and he ordered me”). (2) This is its wording in Sunan Abī Dāwūd and Sunan an-Nasa’i; an-Nasa’i adds “wa dhakara duʿāʾan lam aḥfaẓhu” (“and he mentioned a supplication which I did not commit to memory”). (3) In ad-Dalā’il (vol. 2, p. 349). (4) In the Ṭ manuscript it reads “ʿāda min,” which is a scribal error; the reading supported by Ḥ and Bayhaqi’s ad-Dalā’il is authentic. (5) The nisba refers to Sinān, a village in the Marw region, as noted in al-Lubbab (2:169). In Ḥ it appears incorrectly as al-Shaybānī (a transcription error); his biography is found in Siyar Aʿlām an-Nublāʾ (9:103). (6) In al-Kāmil by Ibn ʿAdī (vol. 1, p. 259).
