Ibn Isḥāq said (1): When Abū Ṭālib fell ill and the gravity of his sickness reached Quraysh, they said to one another, “Hamzah and ʿUmar have embraced Islam, and Muhammad’s cause has spread throughout every clan of Quraysh. Come, let us go to Abū Ṭālib so that he may secure a pledge for us from his nephew and offer him a pledge from us, for by Allah we fear that they will wrest our authority from us.”
Ibn Isḥāq continued: ʿAbbās ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Maʿbad related to me—from some of his household—on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, who said: When they went to Abū Ṭālib and spoke with him—those nobles of his people: ʿUtbah ibn Rabīʿah, Shaybah ibn Rabīʿah, Abū Jahl ibn Hishām, Umayyah ibn Khalaf, Abū Sufyān ibn Ḥarb, and other leaders—they said, “Abū Ṭālib, you occupy the standing among us that you know, and you see what has come upon you. We fear for you, and you know the conflict between us and your nephew. Summon him; obtain from him a promise for us and give him a promise from us: let him leave us and our religion, and we will leave him and his religion.”
Abū Ṭālib sent for him, and when he arrived Abū Ṭālib said, “My nephew, these are the chiefs of your people, gathered on your account, to offer you something and to take something from you.”
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, “Very well—grant me a single word, and by it you will rule the Arabs and the non-Arabs will submit to you.” (3)
Abū Jahl said, “Yes, by your father—even ten words!”
He ﷺ said, “Say: ‘There is no god but Allah,’ and renounce whatever you worship besides Him.”
They clapped their hands and said, “Muhammad! Do you want to turn the gods into one God? Truly your affair is astonishing!” Then they said to one another, “By Allah, this man will not give you any of what you seek. Depart and remain upon the religion of your forefathers until Allah judges between you and him.” Then they dispersed.
Abū Ṭālib said, “By Allah, my nephew, I do not see that you asked them for anything excessive.”
Sensing hope, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him (4): “O uncle, so say it yourself, and by it I will be allowed to intercede for you on the Day of Resurrection.”
When he saw the Prophet’s earnestness, Abū Ṭālib said, “My nephew, by Allah, were it not for fear of disgrace for you and for the sons of your father after me, and that Quraysh would suppose I only said it out of dread of death, I would say it—indeed, I would say it solely to please you.”
When death drew near to Abū Ṭālib, al-ʿAbbās saw his lips moving; he leaned close and listened, then said, “My nephew, by Allah, my brother has spoken the word you urged him to say.”
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, “I did not hear it.” (5)
