Ibn Jarīr likewise related it (1) through the narration of Asbāṭ, from Sammāk.
Al-Ḥāfiẓ Abū Nuʿaym (2) said: “Abū Bakr al-Ṭalḥī told us; Abū Ḥuṣayn Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥusayn al-Wādiʿī told us; Yaḥyā al-Ḥimmānī told us; Yazīd told us, from ʿAṭāʾ, from Sammāk, from Ibrāhīm, from ʿAlqamah, from ʿAbd Allāh, who said:
‘We were with the Prophet ﷺ at Minā when the moon split until it became two pieces; one piece disappeared behind the mountain. The Prophet ﷺ then said, “Bear witness, bear witness.”’ (3)”
Abū Nuʿaym (4) also said: “Sulaymān ibn [Aḥmad] told us; Jaʿfar ibn Muḥammad al-Qalānsi told us; Ādam ibn Abī Iyās told us; al-Layth ibn Saʿd told us; Hishām ibn Saʿd told us, from ʿUtbah, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUtbah, from Ibn Masʿūd, who said:
‘The moon split while we were in Mecca—I actually saw one of its halves upon the mountain that is at Minā while we were in Mecca.’ (5)”
Aḥmad ibn Isḥāq told us; Abū Bakr ibn Abī ʿĀṣim told us; Muḥammad ibn Ḥātim told us; Muʿāwiyah ibn ʿAmr told us; Zāʾidah related to us, from ʿĀṣim, from Zirr, from ʿAbd Allāh, who said: “The moon split in Mecca, and I saw it in two halves.” (6)
He (4) also transmitted, through ʿAlī ibn Saʿīd ibn Masrūq: Mūsā ibn ʿUmayr told us, from Manṣūr ibn al-Muʿtamir, from Zayd ibn Wahb, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd, who said: “By Allah, I saw the moon split into two, with Mount Ḥirāʾ between the two parts.”
Abū Nuʿaym (4) further reported through al-Suddī al-Ṣaghīr, from al-Kalbī, from Abū Ṣāliḥ, from Ibn ʿAbbās, who said: “The moon split into two pieces: one went away and one remained.” Ibn Masʿūd said: “I saw Mount Ḥirāʾ between the two halves of the moon, and then one half moved away.” The people of Mecca were astounded and said, “This is contrived sorcery that will soon pass.”
Layth ibn Abī Sulaym narrated from Mujāhid, who said: “The moon split during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and became two pieces. The Prophet ﷺ said to Abū Bakr, ‘Bear witness, O Abū Bakr.’ (7) The idolaters said, ‘He has bewitched the moon until it split.’”
These are numerous pathways with robust chains of transmission; anyone who studies them and knows the reliability of their transmitters will be certain of the event. As for the story some storytellers circulate—that the moon fell to the earth, entered the sleeve of the Prophet ﷺ and came out of the other sleeve—there is no foundation for it.
