(al-Bukhārī), and al-Bukhārī went on to say:
Abū al-Duḥā (1) reported from Masrūq, from ʿAbd Allāh, that the [splitting] took place “in Mecca.” Muḥammad ibn Muslim likewise corroborated it through Ibn Abī Najīḥ, from Mujāhid, from Abū Maʿmar, from ʿAbd Allāh ﵁.
Abū Dāwūd al-Ṭayālisī also recorded the ḥadīth of Abū al-Duḥā from Masrūq in his Musnad (2), saying: “Abū ʿAwānah narrated to us, from al-Mughīrah, from Abū al-Duḥā, from Masrūq” (3), from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd, who said:
“The moon split apart during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Quraysh then exclaimed, ‘This is the sorcery of the son of Abī Kabshah! Wait and see (4) what the travelers bring back, for Muhammad cannot bewitch everyone in the world.’ When the travelers arrived, they confirmed the event.”
Al-Bayhaqī (5) said: Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥāfiẓ informed us; [Abū al-ʿAbbās] (6) narrated to us; al-ʿAbbās ibn Muḥammad al-Dūrī narrated to us; Saʿīd ibn Sulaymān narrated to us; Hushaym narrated to us; al-Mughīrah narrated, from Abū al-Duḥā, from Masrūq, from ʿAbd Allāh, who said:
“The moon split in Mecca until it became two distinct parts. The disbelievers of Quraysh said to the Meccans, ‘This is sorcery with which the son of Abī Kabshah has bewitched you. Ask the travelers: if they saw what you saw, he has spoken the truth; but if they did not, then it is magic by which he has enchanted you.’ The travelers—who had come from every direction (7)—were questioned and they replied, ‘We saw it as well.’”
Ibn Jarīr (8) transmitted a similar version from al-Mughīrah, adding: so Allah Most High revealed, “The Hour has drawn near and the moon has split” (Q 54:1). [The same report] (9) was related by Abū Nuʿaym through the chain of Jābir (10) from al-Aʿmash, from Abū al-Duḥā, from Masrūq, from ʿAbd Allāh.
Imām Aḥmad (11) said: Muʾammal narrated to us; Isrāʾīl narrated to us, from Sammāk, from Ibrāhīm, from al-Aswad, from ʿAbd Allāh—i.e., Ibn Masʿūd—who said:
“The moon split during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ until I could see the mountain between the two halves of the moon.”
