As for the narration of Ibn ʿUmar, al-Ḥāfiẓ al-Bayhaqī (1) said: Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥāfiẓ and Abū Bakr Aḥmad ibn al-Ḥasan al-Qāḍī informed us, both stating: Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Aṣamm narrated to us; al-ʿAbbās ibn Muḥammad al-Dūrī narrated to us; Wahb ibn Jarīr narrated to us, from Shuʿbah, from al-Aʿmash, from Mujāhid, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar regarding the verse, “The Hour has drawn near and the moon has split” (Q 54:1). He said: “That actually occurred during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ—the moon split into two pieces, one on this side of the mountain and the other on the far side—whereupon the Prophet ﷺ said, ‘O Allah, bear witness.’”
Muslim and al-Tirmidhī recorded this report through several chains (3) [from Shuʿbah, from al-Aʿmash, from Mujāhid] (4) with the same wording. Muslim (5) remarked that it agrees with the narration of Mujāhid from Abū Maʿmar from Ibn Masʿūd, and al-Tirmidhī (6) judged it to be ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ.
Concerning the report of ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd, Imām Aḥmad (7) said: Sufyān narrated to us, from Ibn Abī Najīḥ, from Mujāhid, from Abū Maʿmar, from Ibn Masʿūd, who said: “The moon split during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ into two parts while the people looked on, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘Bear witness.’”
The two Shaykhs (8) likewise recorded it from Sufyān—namely, Ibn ʿUyaynah—with this chain. They also transmitted it from al-Aʿmash, from Ibrāhīm, from Abū Maʿmar, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd (10), who said: “The moon split while we were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at Minā. The Prophet ﷺ said, ‘Bear witness,’ and one portion moved toward the mountain.” (Exact wording)
