Then al-Bukhārī said (1): ʿUbayd ibn Ismāʿīl narrated to us; Abū Usāmah narrated to us, from Hishām, from his father, from Saʿīd ibn Zayd ibn ʿAmr ibn Nufayl.
A woman named Arwā brought a claim against him, alleging that he had diminished her share of land and took the matter before Marwān. Saʿīd said, “Would I take anything of her right? I testify that I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say:
‘Whoever unlawfully takes even a handspan of land will be made to wear it—as a collar—from the seven earths on the Day of Resurrection.’”
He also recorded it elsewhere (2).
Imām Aḥmad said (3): Ḥasan and Abū Saʿīd—the freedman of Banū Hāshim—both narrated to us: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Lahīʿah narrated to us; ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Abī Jaʿfar narrated to us, from Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Ḥublī, from Ibn Masʿūd, who said:
I asked, “O Messenger of Allah, which injustice is the gravest?” He replied:
“A cubit of land that a Muslim subtracts from his brother’s right. There is not a single pebble of land that anyone seizes but that he will be made to wear it as a collar on the Day of Resurrection down to the bottom of the earth—and none knows its depth except He who created it.”
Aḥmad alone transmitted this report, and its chain is sound.
Imām Aḥmad also said (4): ʿAffān narrated to us; Wahīb narrated to us; Suhayl narrated to us, from his father, from Abū Hurayrah, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Whoever appropriates a handspan of land without right will be made to wear it—from the seven earths—as a collar.”
He alone narrated it through this route, and it meets Muslim’s criterion.
Aḥmad further said (5): Yaḥyā narrated to us, from Ibn ʿAjlān; my father narrated to me, from Abū Hurayrah, from the Prophet ﷺ, who said:
“Whoever cuts off a handspan of land without right will be made to wear it as a collar, down to the seven earths.”
He transmitted it exclusively, and it too meets Muslim’s criterion.
Aḥmad likewise said (6): ʿAffān narrated to us; Abū ʿAwānah narrated to us, from ʿUmar ibn Abī Salamah, from his father, from Abū Hurayrah, from the Prophet ﷺ:
“Whoever takes a handspan of land without right will be made to wear it—from the seven earths—as a collar.”
Aḥmad alone transmitted it as well,
