He placed his hand over the Prophet’s mouth, pleading with him by the bonds of kinship to desist, and he did not return home but stayed away from his family.
Abu Jahl then declared, “By Allah, people of Quraysh, it seems that ʿUtbah has abandoned our faith for Muhammad and been won over by his food. This can only be because some need has befallen him. Come, let us go to him.” They went to ʿUtbah, and Abu Jahl said, “By Allah, ʿUtbah, we have come only because you have defected to Muhammad and been impressed by his cause. If you are in want, we will gather for you from our wealth enough to spare you the need for Muhammad’s food.”
ʿUtbah grew angry and swore by Allah that he would never again speak to Muhammad. He said, “You know I am among the wealthiest of Quraysh. Yet I went to him”—and he recounted the incident—“and he replied with words that, by Allah, are neither sorcery, poetry, nor soothsaying. He recited:
‘In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful. Ḥā Mīm. A revelation from the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful …’
until he reached, ‘But if they turn away, then say: I have warned you of a thunderbolt like the thunderbolt that struck ʿĀd and Thamūd’ (Fussilat 41:13). I put my hand over his mouth and pleaded with him by our kinship to stop. You know that when Muhammad speaks, he does not lie, and I feared that punishment might befall you.”

“I was told that ʿUtbah ibn Rabīʿah—who was a noble and forbearing leader—once said, while he was seated in the assembly of Quraysh and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was sitting alone in the mosque, ‘People of Quraysh, shall I not rise to this man and speak to him? Perhaps I can present some proposals to him which he might accept, and thus he will leave us alone.’ They replied, ‘Yes indeed, Abu al-Walīd!’ So ʿUtbah stood up and sat beside the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The narration sets out what ʿUtbah said to him and what he offered him of wealth, power, and other things.
When ʿUtbah finished, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, ‘Have you finished, Abu al-Walīd?’ He answered, ‘Yes.’ The Prophet said, ‘Then listen to me.’ ‘I will,’ he replied.
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) then said:
