When they made those demands, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ rose and left them. ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Umayyah ibn al-Mughīrah ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar ibn Makhzūm—his maternal cousin, the son of ʿĀtikah bint ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib—rose with him and said:
“O Muḥammad, your people have offered you what they offered, yet you would not accept it. Then they asked you to do certain things for their own sakes so they might know your standing with Allah, and you did not do them. Then they asked you to bring upon them the punishment with which you threaten them, and still you did not comply. By Allah, I shall never believe you until you make a ladder up to the heaven, climb it while I watch, then return with an open writ, accompanied by four angels who testify that you are indeed as you claim; and, by Allah, even were you to do that, I suspect I would still not believe you.”
He turned away from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ returned to his household saddened and distressed—pained at losing the hope he had felt when his people summoned him, and grieved by the distance he saw them putting between themselves and him.
That gathering of the chiefs was one of injustice, aggression, and obstinate defiance; hence divine wisdom and merciful grace decreed that their requests be denied, for Allah knew they would not believe even then and would therefore merit immediate punishment. As Imām Aḥmad narrated: “ʿUthmān ibn Muḥammad told us; Jarīr told us, from al-Aʿmash, from Jaʿfar ibn Iyās, from Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ʿAbbās who said:
‘The people of Mecca asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to turn al-Ṣafā into gold and to remove the surrounding mountains so they could cultivate the land. It was said to him: ‘If you wish, be patient with them; and if you wish, I will grant them what they ask—yet if they then disbelieve they will be destroyed as were the previous nations.’ He said, ‘No, rather I will be patient with them.’”
Thereupon Allah, Exalted is He, revealed: “Nothing has prevented Us from sending the signs except that the former peoples denied them; [and We gave Thamūd the she-camel as a visible sign, yet they wronged her] …” (17:59).
Al-Nasāʾī likewise transmitted it through the chain of Jarīr.
Aḥmad also said: “ʿAbd al-Raḥmān told us; Sufyān told us, from Salamah ibn Kuhayl, from ʿImrān ibn Ḥakam, from Ibn ʿAbbās who said: ‘The Quraysh said to the Prophet ﷺ, ‘Call upon your Lord to turn al-Ṣafā into gold and we will believe you.’ He replied …”
