“Perish the hands of Abū Lahab, and may he perish!” (al-Masad 111:1)
Both al-Bukhārī and Muslim also transmit this ḥadīth through the isnād of al-Aʿmash with a similar wording.
Imām Aḥmad likewise relates—Muʿāwiyah ibn ʿAmr narrated to us, Zāʾidah narrated to us, ʿAbd al-Malik ibn ʿUmayr narrated to us, from Mūsā ibn Ṭalḥah—who said:
When the verse “And warn your nearest kinsfolk” was revealed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ summoned Quraysh, addressing them both collectively and individually, and proclaimed:
“O assembly of Quraysh, save your souls from the Fire! O descendants of Kaʿb [ibn Luʾayy], save yourselves from the Fire! O descendants of ʿAbd Manāf, save yourselves from the Fire! O descendants of Hāshim, save yourselves from the Fire! O descendants of ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, save yourselves from the Fire! O Fāṭimah daughter of Muḥammad, save yourself from the Fire! For, by Allah, I possess no power to protect you against Allah. All I can offer you is the tie of kinship, which I shall honour as it deserves.”
Muslim has also recorded this report through the chain of ʿAbd al-Malik ibn ʿUmayr. The two Ṣaḥīḥs include another version through al-Zuhrī, from Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyab and Abū Salamah, from Abū Hurayrah, and there are further routes from Abū Hurayrah in the Musnad of Aḥmad and elsewhere.
Aḥmad likewise narrates—Wakīʿ told us, Hishām told us, from his father, on the authority of ʿĀʾishah, may Allah be pleased with her—that when the verse “And warn your nearest kinsfolk” was revealed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood and said:
“O Fāṭimah daughter of Muḥammad, O Ṣafiyyah daughter of ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, O descendants of ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, I have no power to avail you before Allah. Ask me of my worldly wealth whatever you wish.”
Muslim also records this version.
Al-Ḥāfiẓ Abū Bakr al-Bayhaqī states in Dalāʾil al-Nubuwwah: Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allah al-Ḥāfiẓ informed us, Abū al-ʿAbbās Muḥammad ibn Yaʿqūb narrated to us, Aḥmad ibn ʿAbd al-Jabbār narrated to us, Yūnus ibn Bukayr narrated to us, from Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq, who said: “Someone who heard ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Ḥārith ibn Nawfal—while asking me to conceal his name—told me, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, from ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib, who said:
When this verse was revealed to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: ‘And warn your nearest kinsfolk (26:214) and lower…’
