Subsequently men and women began entering Islam in groups until the faith became widespread in Mecca and people spoke openly of it.
Ibn Isḥāq said: Three years after the onset of revelation, Allah commanded His Messenger ﷺ to proclaim publicly what he had been ordered and to endure the harm of the idolaters.
He also said: Whenever the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ wished to pray, they would go into the mountain passes to hide their worship from their people. One day Saʿd ibn Abī Waqqāṣ was praying there with a group when some idolaters came upon them, confronted them, and mocked their religion.
