The Conversion of Abū Dharr
Al-Ḥāfiẓ al-Bayhaqī (1) relates: Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥāfiẓ informed us; Abū ʿAbd Allāh Muḥammad ibn Yaʿqūb al-Ḥāfiẓ narrated to us; al-Ḥusayn ibn Muḥammad ibn Ziyād narrated to us; ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Rūmī narrated to us; al-Naḍr ibn Muḥammad narrated to us; ʿIkrimah ibn ʿAmmār narrated to us, from Abū Zumayl Simāk ibn al-Walīd, from Mālik ibn Murthid, from his father, from Abū Dharr who said:
“I constituted one-quarter of the Muslims—three people had embraced Islam before me and I was the fourth (2). I went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, ‘Peace be upon you, O Messenger of Allah. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.’ I could see delight shine across the face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.”
This is an abbreviated version of the report.
Al-Bukhārī records the story of Abū Dharr’s conversion (3): ʿAmr ibn ʿAbbās narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Mahdī narrated to us, from al-Muthannā, from Abū Jamrah (4), from Ibn ʿAbbās, who said:
“When news of the Prophet’s ﷺ mission reached Abū Dharr, he said to his brother, ‘Mount and go down to that valley; find out for me about this man who claims that he is a Prophet to whom news comes from heaven. Listen to what he says, then come back to me.’ His brother went, came to the Prophet, heard some of his words, then returned to Abū Dharr and said, ‘I saw him commanding noble character and uttering speech that is not poetry.’ Abū Dharr replied, ‘You have not satisfied the need I felt.’
“So he packed provisions, shouldered a waterskin, and set off for Mecca. He entered the mosque looking for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, but he did not know him and disliked asking about him. Part of the night passed and he lay down. ʿAlī saw him and realized he was a stranger; he followed him, yet neither of them asked the other anything until morning. Abū Dharr then carried his waterskin and provisions to the mosque and stayed the rest of that day, but the Prophet ﷺ did not notice him until evening. He returned to his bedding place, and ʿAlī passed by and said, ‘Has the man not yet found a lodging?’ He took him home with him, and still neither asked the other anything.
“On the third day ʿAlī did the same, then said, ‘Will you not tell me what has brought you here?’ Abū Dharr answered, ‘If you will give me a firm pledge and covenant that you will guide me, I will tell you.’ ʿAlī agreed, and Abū Dharr informed him of his purpose.
“ʿAlī said, ‘It is the truth, and he is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Tomorrow morning follow me. If I see something that makes me fear for you, I shall stop as though I were pouring water; but if I keep walking, follow me until you enter where I enter.’ Abū Dharr did so, trailing behind ʿAlī until they entered upon the Prophet ﷺ, and he entered with him. He listened to the Prophet’s words and accepted Islam on the spot.
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said to him, ‘Return to your people and inform them until my command reaches you.’ He replied, ‘By Him Who sent you with the truth…’
