Section: The first among the Companions to embrace Islam
Ibn Isḥāq relates: The next day ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib—may Allah be pleased with him—came by while the two of them were praying. ʿAlī said, “O Muḥammad, what is this?”
He answered, “It is Allah’s religion, which He has chosen for Himself and with which He sent His messengers. I call you to Allah alone, without partner, to worship Him, and to renounce al-Lāt and al-ʿUzzā.”
ʿAlī replied, “I have never heard of such a thing before today. I will decide nothing until I have spoken to Abū Ṭālib.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ disliked that his secret be divulged before his mission became public, so he said, “ʿAlī, if you are not yet ready to accept Islam, then keep it to yourself.”
ʿAlī spent the night reflecting, and Allah placed Islam in his heart. At dawn he hurried to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, “What was it you proposed to me, O Muḥammad?” The Prophet ﷺ replied, “That you bear witness there is no god but Allah alone, without partner; that you reject al-Lāt and al-ʿUzzā; and that you disavow all rivals to Him.” ʿAlī did so and embraced Islam. Thereafter he visited the Prophet secretly, fearing Abū Ṭālib, and concealed his faith from others.
Zayd, the son of Ḥārithah, also accepted Islam. For about a month the two of them continued in this way, with ʿAlī coming and going to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Among the favors Allah bestowed upon ʿAlī was that he had been raised in the household of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ even before Islam.
Ibn Isḥāq further narrates, through Ibn Abī Najīḥ from Mujāhid: One of Allah’s blessings to ʿAlī was that Quraysh were afflicted by a severe famine, and Abū Ṭālib had many dependants. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to his uncle al-ʿAbbās—who was the wealthiest of the Banū Hāshim—“O ʿAbbās, your brother Abū Ṭālib has many children, and the people are suffering from the hardship you see. Come, let us relieve him of some of his burden.” The Prophet ﷺ then took ʿAlī into his own care, and ʿAlī remained with him until Allah commissioned him as a prophet. ʿAlī followed him, believed in him, and affirmed his truthfulness.
Yūnus ibn Bukayr reports from Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq: Yaḥyā ibn Abī al-Ashʿath al-Kindī of Kūfah told me, saying: Ismāʿīl ibn Iyās ibn ʿAfīf related to me from his father, from his grandfather ʿAfīf—who was a brother of al-Ashʿath ibn
