Al-Ḥāfiẓ Abū Nuʿaym relates:
“Sulaymān ibn Aḥmad—namely, al-Ṭabarānī—told us; ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad ibn Saʿīd ibn Abī Maryam told us; Muḥammad ibn Yūsuf al-Firyābī told us; Isrāʾīl narrated to us, from Abū Isḥāq, from Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ʿAbbās who said:
‘The jinn used to ascend to the heaven to eavesdrop on the revelation. Whenever they caught a single word, they added to it nine more. The one word was true, whereas all that they added was falsehood. When the Prophet ﷺ was sent, they were driven from their seats. They reported this to Iblīs, for before that the stars had never been hurled against them. Iblīs replied, “Something momentous has taken place on earth.” He dispatched his forces and they found the Messenger of Allah ﷺ standing in prayer between two mountains. They returned to him and informed him, whereupon he said, “That is the event which has occurred on earth.”’
Abū ʿAwānah also narrates, through Abū Bishr, from Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ʿAbbās:
‘The Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his Companions set out for the ʿUkāẓ market. Meanwhile the devils had been barred from news of the heavens and shooting stars were loosed upon them. The devils returned to their people, who asked, “What is the matter with you?” They replied, “We have been prevented from the tidings of heaven, and meteors have been sent against us.” Their people said, “This can only be because something new has happened. Traverse the eastern and western horizons of the earth and find out what it is.” [So they scattered across the earth saying, “Look for whatever has blocked us from the news of heaven.”]
Those who headed toward Tihāmah—at Nakhla—passed by while he ﷺ was praying the dawn prayer with his Companions on their way to the ʿUkāẓ market. When they heard the Qur’an, they stopped to listen and said, “This is what has come between us and the news of heaven.” They returned to their people and said, “O our people,
‘Indeed, we have heard a wondrous Qur’an;
It guides to righteousness, so we have believed in it, and we will never associate anyone with our Lord.’ (al-Jinn 72:1–2)
Thereupon Allah revealed to His Prophet ﷺ:
‘Say, it has been revealed to me that a company of the jinn listened…’ (al-Jinn 72:1).
This report is recorded by al-Bukhārī and Muslim.
Abū Bakr ibn Abī Shaybah likewise reports:
‘Muḥammad ibn Faḍl narrated to us, from ʿAṭāʾ ibn al-Sāʾib, from Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ʿAbbās who said:
“There was no tribe among the jinn but that it had stations for listening. When revelation descended, the angels would hear a sound like iron striking solid rock. Upon hearing it, the angels would fall down in prostration and would not raise their heads…”’
