Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said,

“There is in Mecca a stone that used to greet me on the nights when I was first commissioned; I still recognize it whenever I pass by it.”

Al-Bayhaqī relates (1), through Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Suddī al-Kabīr, from ʿAbbād ibn ʿAbd Allāh, from ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib—may Allah be pleased with him—who said:

“We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in Mecca when he went out to one of its outskirts. No tree or mountain confronted him without saying, ‘Peace be upon you, O Messenger of Allah.’”

In another version (2) he said: “I once entered the valley with him, and every stone or small tree we passed would say, ‘Peace be upon you, O Messenger of Allah,’ and I could hear it.”

Al-Bukhārī states in the narration cited earlier (3): “Then the revelation ceased, and the Prophet ﷺ—as we have been informed—became so distressed (4) that he went out several times intending to hurl himself from the summits of high mountains. Whenever he reached the peak and was about to throw himself, Gabriel would appear to him and say, ‘O Muḥammad, you are indeed the true Messenger of Allah.’ His heart would then be set at ease and he would return. But when the pause in revelation grew long, he would go out again with the same intention; and whenever he reached a mountain top Gabriel would appear and say to him what he had said before.”

In the two Ṣaḥīḥs (5), in the report of ʿAbd al-Razzāq from Maʿmar, from al-Zuhrī, who said: I heard Abū Salamah ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān narrate from Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh, who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ speak about the pause in revelation:

“While I was walking I heard a voice from the sky, so I raised my eyes (6) and there was the angel who had come to me at Ḥirā’, seated upon a throne between heaven and earth. I was seized with terror (7) and became greatly afraid (8) until I rushed down to the ground. I went to my family and said, ‘Wrap me up! Wrap me up!’”

= Signs confirming the Prophet’s ﷺ prophethood. He remarked: “This is a ḥasan gharīb hadith.” It originates, as he noted, from Simāk ibn Ḥarb. (1) Found in al-Bayhaqī’s Dalāʾil al-Nubuwwa (vol. 2, pp. 153–154) and also in al-Tirmidhī’s Sunan (no. 3630, al-Manāqib, ch. 6) on the authority of ʿAbd ibn Yaʿqūb → al-Walīd ibn Abī Thawr → ʿAbd ibn Abī Yazīd → ʿAlī, who described it as “gharīb” (i.e. weak). (2) Also recorded by al-Bayhaqī in Dalāʾil al-Nubuwwa (vol. 3, p. 154). (3) See above, p. 187, note 5. al-Bukhārī’s version appears as no. 6982. Ibn Ḥajar (Tahdhīb al-Tahdhīb 12:359) remarks that the addition “until he grieved…” is peculiar to Muʿammar’s transmission and stems from al-Zuhrī’s paraphrases; it is not connected (munqaṭiʿ). (4) Ibn Ḥajar (12:360) glosses “ʿadā” (with the hamza omitted) as “swift motion,” while others derive it from “ghadwa” (a dawn journey). (5) See al-Bukhārī, al-Fath al-Bārī no. 4925; in the Tafsīr of Sūrat al-Muddaththir (74), ch. “wa-thiyābaka faṭahir”; and Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim (255/161), Book of Faith, ch. “The Beginning of Revelation.” (6) One manuscript adds “before the heaven.” This addition belongs not to this Bukhārī hadith but to the next one (no. 4926). (7) “ja’that minhu” means “I was startled and frightened”; it is also transmitted as “jaththat,” understood as “I was uprooted from my place.” al-Ḥarbī notes that “jū’that”—the reading in al-Ṣaḥīḥayn—replaces the hamza with a tā’. See al-Nihāya (entries jā’th–jathth). (8) In al-Ḥ’s edition “faz‘an,” whereas al-Bukhārī reads “ru‘ban.”
