I recited it; then he ceased and withdrew from me, and I awoke from my sleep as though a book had been inscribed in my heart (1).
I went out, and when I was in the middle of the mountain I heard a voice from the sky calling, “O Muhammad, you are the Messenger of God, and I am Gabriel.”
I lifted my head toward the heavens and looked (2), and there was Gabriel in the likeness of a man, his feet set together on the horizon of the sky, saying, “O Muhammad, you are the Messenger of God, and I am Gabriel.” I stood staring at him—unable to move forward or backward. I kept turning my face away to every quarter of the heavens, yet whenever I looked in any direction I saw him there in the same way. I remained standing, neither advancing nor retreating, until Khadījah sent her messengers in search of me. They reached the upper outskirts of Mecca (3) and then returned to her while I was still standing in that very spot; thereafter he departed from me.
I too departed and made my way back to my family until I came to Khadījah and sat leaning against her thigh for support (4). She said, “Abū al-Qāsim, where have you been? By God, I sent messengers to look for you; they reached Mecca and came back to me.” I then related to her what I had seen.
She replied, “Rejoice, cousin, and stand firm. By Him in whose hand Khadījah’s soul is, I hope you are the prophet of this community.”
She rose, wrapped her garments around her, and went to Waraqah ibn Nawfal. She informed him of what the Messenger of God ﷺ had told her. Waraqah exclaimed, “Holy! Holy! By Him in whose hand Waraqah’s soul is, if you have spoken the truth, Khadījah, the Greatest Namūs who used to come to Moses has come to him. He is indeed the prophet of this nation; tell him, therefore, to stand firm.”
Khadījah returned to the Messenger of God ﷺ and conveyed Waraqah’s words to him. When the Messenger of God ﷺ had finished his retreat and returned, he did what he always did: he began with the Kaʿbah and circumambulated it. Waraqah ibn Nawfal met him while he was making ṭawāf around the Kaʿbah and said, “My nephew, tell me what you have seen and heard.” He related it to him, and Waraqah said, “By Him in whose hand is my soul, you are the prophet of this community; the Greatest Namūs who came to Moses has come to you. You will surely be denied, harmed, driven out, and fought. If I live to see that day, I shall support God with a support He will surely recognize.” He then drew near, kissed the crown of his head (5), and the Messenger of God ﷺ returned to his home.
What ʿUbayd ibn ʿUmayr has related, as we have cited it, serves as a prelude to what subsequently occurred in the waking state, as ʿĀʾishah ﵂ said: “Every vision he saw thereafter came as clear as the break of dawn” (6). It is possible that this dream took place after what he had seen
