May you ever remain a noble, sustaining chief; may the favor you have been granted never be surpassed by any of the jinn for as long as you live.
He answered:
[rajaz]
May Allah be your Companion and keep your saddle from all harm;
may He enlarge your reward and grant your soul well-being.
Believe in him—my Lord will make your cause prevail;
stand by him—my Lord will strengthen the victory He grants you.
I said, “Who are you—may Allah grant you health—so that I can inform him when I reach him?”
He replied, “I am a king, the son of a king, and I am his marshal over the jinn of Naṣībīn. Your camels have been safeguarded; I shall deliver them to your family, if Allah wills.”
So I set out and reached Madinah on a Friday while people were streaming toward the mosque. The Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—was on the pulpit, shining like the full moon, addressing the congregation.
I thought, “I will make my mount kneel at the mosque gate until he finishes the prayer; then I shall go in, greet him, and tell him of my acceptance of Islam.”
When I had knelt my mount, Abū Dharr came out to me and said, “Welcome, welcome indeed! News of your Islam has reached us. Enter and pray.” I did so, then went to the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—and told him about my Islam.
I said, “Praise belongs to Allah.”
He said, “Your companion has certainly kept his promise to you—he is worthy of that—and Allah has returned your camels to your family.”
Al-Ṭabarānī also narrated the account in the biography of Khuraym ibn Fātik in his al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr, reporting:
Ḥusayn ibn Isḥāq al-Tustarī told us; Muḥammad ibn Ibrāhīm al-Shāmī told us; ʿAbd Allāh ibn Mūsā al-Iskandarī told us; Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq told us, from Saʿīd ibn Abī Saʿīd al-Maqburī, from Abū Hurayrah, who said:
Khuraym ibn Fātik said to ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb, “Commander of the Believers, shall I not tell you how my Islam first began?”
He replied, “Yes,” and Khuraym recounted the story, except that he added:
“Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq came out to me and said, ‘Enter, for news of your Islam has reached us.’ I replied, ‘I do not know how to perform ablution.’ So he taught me, and I entered the mosque.
I saw the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—radiant like the full moon, saying,
‘No Muslim performs ablution and perfects it, then offers a prayer, safeguarding its requirements and concentrating on it, without entering Paradise.’
ʿUmar then said to me, ‘You must bring me proof of this or I will punish you.’ An elder of Quraysh, ʿUthmān ibn ʿAffān, testified on my behalf, and ʿUmar accepted his testimony.”
