Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

“Will you really comply,(1) while your mother is on the verge of losing her child? Imagine that we shift it away from you with a lever, fill it with great stones, and hurl al-Qusal into it—the one who has gone on ahead of you, thinking the thing would never happen. Would you then thank your Lord and pray, and abandon the religion of those who associate partners and have gone astray?”

I said, “Yes.”

He replied, “Rise—you are cured.”

The man recovered, and al-Qusal died and was placed in that very pit.

Al-Juhayni added: I later saw that Juhayni praying, reviling the idols, and heaping abuse upon them.(2)

Al-Umawī said: ʿAbd Allāh related to us: While ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb—may Allah be pleased with him—was sitting in an assembly where they were discussing the jinn, Khuraym ibn Fātik al-Asadī said, “Shall I not tell you how I embraced Islam?” He replied, “Yes.” Khuraym said:

“One day I was searching for a few stray camels of mine; I was following their tracks, descending into valleys and climbing the slopes,(3) until I reached Abraq al-ʿAzzāf.(4) There I made my mount kneel and said, ‘I seek refuge with the mighty one of this town; I seek refuge with the chief of this valley.’ Suddenly a voice called out to me:

[rajaz]
Woe to you—seek refuge with Allah, Lord of Majesty,
of glory, loftiness, and boundless grace;
then recite verses from al-Anfāl,
affirm Allah’s oneness and have no fear.

I was seized by terrible fright, but I collected myself and said:

[rajaz]
O unseen caller, what is it you proclaim?
Do you bring guidance or misguidance?
Make it clear—may Allah guide you—what path you mean.(5)

He answered:

[rajaz]
This is the Messenger of Allah, possessor of all good;
in Yathrib he summons to salvation.
He enjoins righteousness and prayer,
and restrains the people from vile deeds.(6)

I said, ‘By Allah, I will not leave until I go to him and believe in him.’ I set my foot in the stirrup(7) of my mount and said:

[rajaz]
Guide me, guide me—you have indeed been guided;(8)
may you never hunger or go unclothed as long as you live.”

(1) The verbs nathala and intathala, as in “nathalu hafrata fulan wa intathalūhā,” mean “they dug his grave.” See al-Asās wa al-Lisān (s.v. nathala). (2) Its isnād (chain of transmission) is weak because the transmitter from whom al-Sha‘bī reported is unidentified. (3) The verb tunsabb means “it slopes downward.” See al-Lisān (s.v. ṣabbaba). (4) Manuscripts H and T read al-‘Iraq, a scribal error. The correct form, recorded by Ibn ‘Asākir in his Tārīkh and by al-Baladhuri in Mu‘jam al-Buldān (1:68), is Abarq al-‘izāf: a spring of Banū Asad ibn Khuzaymah on the route from Basra to Medina, fed by the Ḥūmānat al-Durāj, named after the whispering of the jinn (‘azif al-jinn) heard there. (5) The expression ma al-ḥawīl (“what is the device?”) refers to al-ḥawīl, meaning skill, keenness of perception, and the capacity for precise handling of affairs. See al-Lisān (s.v. ḥ-w-l). (6) Manuscript T reads wa yaz‘u; both verbs share the same meaning, denoting admonition, prohibition, and restraint. (7) Al-ghuruz are the saddle stirrups, made of studded leather, on which one relies when mounting. See al-Mu‘jam al-Wasīṭ (s.v. gh-r-z). (8) Preserved in manuscripts H and T, the verse is metrically irregular. The version transmitted by Abū Na‘īm in al-Dalāʾil, which is nearer to correctness, reads: “Arshidnī rushdan bihā hudaytā.”
