It is said that all of Ruhāṭ used to drink from that spring, and so the people came to call it “the Water of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him.” The inhabitants of Ruhāṭ would even bathe in it.
The stone that Rāshid threw reached al-Rakīb—a place also known as Rakīb al-Ḥajar—and on the very next morning Rāshid went to Suwāʿ and smashed it.
Abū Nuʿaym relates: Sulaimān ibn Aḥmad told us; ʿAlī ibn Ibrāhīm al-Khuzaʿī al-Ahwāzī told us; Abū Muḥammad ʿAbd Allāh ibn Dāwūd ibn Dilhāth ibn Ismāʿīl ibn Musriʿ ibn Yāsir ibn Suwayd—the Companion of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him—told us; my father narrated to me from his father Dilhāth, from his father Ismāʿīl, who reported from his father ʿAbd Allāh, who reported from his father Musriʿ ibn Yāsir, who reported from his father Yāsir that ʿAmr ibn Murrah al-Juhanī used to recount:
“I set out for the pilgrimage with a party of my tribe in the Days of Ignorance. While in Mecca I dreamed of a brilliant light bursting forth from the Kaʿbah until it lit up Mount Yathrib and the territory of Juhaynah. I heard a voice within the light proclaiming, ‘The darkness has dispersed, the radiance has shone, and the Seal of the Prophets has been sent.’ The light flared again until I could see the palaces of al-Ḥīrah and the White Palace of al-Madāʾin, and the voice said, ‘Islam has appeared, idols have been broken, and kinship ties have been restored.’
“I awoke in fright and said to my companions, ‘By Allah, something momentous is about to happen among this clan of Quraysh,’ and I told them what I had seen. When we returned home, a man came to us and informed us that a person called Aḥmad had been sent as a prophet. I went to him and told him of my vision. He said:
‘O ʿAmr ibn Murrah, I have been sent to all people. I call them to Islam, command them to refrain from bloodshed, maintain family ties, worship Allah alone, renounce idols, perform the pilgrimage to the House, and fast the month of Ramadan—one month out of twelve. Whoever answers the call will have Paradise; whoever refuses will have the Fire. Believe, O ʿAmr ibn Murrah, and Allah will safeguard you from the Fire of Hell.’
“I declared, ‘I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that you are the Messenger of Allah. I believe in everything you have brought, lawful and unlawful alike, even though many peoples may despise it.’
“I then recited some verses I had composed when I first heard about him. We once had an idol, and my father was its custodian, but I stood up, smashed it, and journeyed to the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—chanting:
[from the ṭawīl metre]
‘I bear witness that Allah is the Truth, and that I …
am the very first to abandon the gods of stone.’
