Thereupon every one of them toppled to the ground.
The Negus said, “Alas for you two! Let me tell you what befell me. On the very night you mention I was asleep in a pavilion, alone in my private chamber, when a neck and head emerged from the earth before me, proclaiming:
‘Woe upon the People of the Elephant!
Flocks of birds hurled at them stones of baked clay.
The split-nosed criminal aggressor has perished.
The unlettered Prophet is born—the Meccan of the Sacred Sanctuary.
Whoever answers his summons will prosper; whoever spurns him will be disgraced.’
It then sank back into the ground and vanished. I tried to shout, but speech failed me; I tried to rise, but could not. I struck the pavilion with my hands, and my household heard and rushed to me.
I said, ‘Screen me from the Abyssinians!’ They kept them from me, and only then were my tongue and my legs released.
Al-Ḥāfiẓ Abū al-Qāsim Ibn ʿAsākir relates in his History, in the biography of al-Hārith ibn Hāniʾ ibn al-Mudlij ibn al-Miqdād ibn Zaml ibn ʿAmr al-ʿUdhrī, from his father, his grandfather, and his great-grandfather, from Zaml ibn ʿAmr al-ʿUdhrī, who said:
‘The tribe of ʿUdhrah had an idol called Ḥammām which they venerated. It stood among the clans of Banū Hind ibn Ḥarām ibn Ḍinnah ibn ʿAbd ibn Kabīr ibn ʿUdhrah, and its custodian was a man named Ṭāriq. People brought their offerings to it.
When the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—appeared, we heard a voice proclaiming:
“O sons of Hind ibn Ḥarām!
Truth has prevailed, Ḥammām has perished,
and Islam has driven away idolatry.”
We were terrified and deeply shaken, and several days passed. Then we heard another voice saying:
“O Ṭāriq, O Ṭāriq!
The truthful Prophet has been sent with a clear Revelation.
A herald has proclaimed in the land of Tihāmah:
safety for those who support him, remorse for those who forsake him.
This is my farewell until the Day of Resurrection.”
Zaml said: The idol fell flat on its face.
He continued: I bought a mount, prepared for the journey, and set out until I reached the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—with a group of my people. I then recited to him the verses I had composed:
To you, O Messenger of Allah, I have driven her hard,
Through desolate sorrow and the deepest desert sand,
So I might champion the best of mankind with steadfast aid,
And bind my rope securely to the cord of yours.
I testify there is none worthy of worship but Allah;
In that belief I serve Him, though my sandals weigh upon my feet.
