Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said to me,

“O ʿAbbās, how did you come to embrace Islam?”

I narrated the whole story to him; he was delighted, and both my people and I accepted Islam.

Al-Ḥāfiẓ Abū Nuʿaym also recorded the report in his Dalāʾil through the chain of Abū Bakr ibn Abī ʿĀṣim from ʿAmr ibn ʿUthmān, and again through another route—related by al-Aṣmaʿī, who was told by al-Waṣṣāfī, from Manṣūr ibn al-Muʿtamir, from Qabīṣah ibn ʿAmr ibn Isḥāq al-Khuzaʿī—from al-ʿAbbās ibn Mirdās al-Sulamī, who said:

“The beginning of my Islam was this: when my father Mirdās was on his death-bed he entrusted me with an idol of his called Ḍamār. I placed it in a room and would visit it once each day. After the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, had appeared, I heard a voice in the depth of night that startled me. I rushed to Ḍamār for help, and the voice came from inside the idol, saying:

Say to the tribe of Sulaym, every clan of it:
The Friendly One has perished; the people of the Mosque now live!
Ḍamār has fallen—once he was worshipped—
before the Book was sent to the Prophet Muḥammad.
The one who has inherited prophethood and guidance,
after the son of Mary, is a rightly guided man of Quraysh.

“I kept this to myself. Later, when the people were returning from the Battle of the Confederates, I was with my camels on the outskirts of al-ʿAqīq near Dhāt ʿIrq, lying down, when I heard another voice. I looked and saw a man riding on something like the wing of an ostrich, calling out:

‘The light that shone on Tuesday night with the owner of the she-camel al-ʿAdhbāʾ has dawned in the lands of the brothers of Banū al-ʿAnqāʾ.’

“A caller answered him from his left, saying:

‘Give the jinn—and Iblīs’s followers—the news:
the mounts have laid aside their saddles, and the sky has withdrawn its guards.’

“I sprang up in alarm and realized then that Muḥammad is indeed a Messenger. I mounted my horse, urged it on, and rode until I reached him; I pledged allegiance to him. I then returned to Ḍamār and burned it to ashes, after which I went back to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and recited to him some verses of poetry, saying:

(1) This narration is not included in the printed edition of Dalāʾil al-Nubuwwah by Abū Nuʿaym. (2) It appears in Dalāʾil al-Nubuwwah (vol. 1, p. 146) – including everything in brackets – and is cited by al-Suyūṭī in al-Khaṣāʾiṣ, where he states: “It was transmitted by Ibn Jirīr, al-Muʿāfāʾ ibn Zakariyyā, and Ibn al-Ṭarrāḥ in Kitāb al-Shawāʿir with their chains of transmission.” Bashshār comments that all these isnād are unknown – and many fabricated – and similarly most of what al-Kharāʾīṭī records in his work. (3) In manuscripts H and T – and in the original Dalāʾil – the term reads “ḍimād.” It was noted above on the previous page (see note 6). (4) In Dalāʾil al-Nubuwwah it reads “mudda.” (5) In manuscript K it reads “fa-katamahu.” (6) “al-ʿAqīq” designates the lower part of Wādī Dhū al-Ḥulayfa – the nearest one – and is identified as the watering-place (maḥl) for travelers from Iraq via Dhāt ʿIrq. See Muʿjam al-Buldān (vol. 4, p. 139, s.v. al-ʿAqīq). (7) “al-ʿUḍbāʾ” was the Prophet’s (ﷺ) she-camel; the term literally means “split-eared,” though she was not split-eared. See al-Nihāya (vol. 3, p. 251, s.v. ʿadb). (8) In manuscript T it reads “wa-iḥtathaṯat,” whereas in Dalāʾil al-Nubuwwah it appears as “wa-ajshamat.” The correct reading is that of manuscript H. (9) In manuscripts H and T (and in the original Dalāʾil) the term reads “ḍimād.”
