Al-Ḥāfiẓ Abū Bakr al-Kharāʾiṭī reported—through his chain—on the authority of Mirdās ibn Qays al-Dawsī, who said:
“I was with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when soothsaying and what it had been like before his advent were mentioned. I said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, we experienced something of that. Shall I tell you?’
“Among us was a young woman called al-Khalāṣah, of whom we had known nothing but good. One day she came to us crying, ‘O people of Daws, how astonishing is what has happened to me! Have you ever known anything but good of me?’
“We asked, ‘What is it?’
“She said, ‘I was with my sheep when darkness suddenly covered me and I felt what a woman feels with a man; I feared I might have conceived. When the time of delivery drew near, I bore a shaggy-haired boy whose ears were like a dog’s. He stayed among us, playing with the other boys, until one day he sprang up, threw off his loin-cloth, and cried at the top of his voice:
Woe, woe!
Grief, grief!
Woe to Ghanm! Woe to Fahm—from the kindler of fire!
Then he chanted in rajaz:
By Allah, the horses lie beyond the pass;
among them are handsome, noble youths.
“We at once mounted, took up our arms, and asked him, ‘Woe to you, what do you see?’
“He replied, ‘Is there a girl who is menstruating?’
“We said, ‘Where shall we find one?’
“An elder among us said, ‘By Allah, I have one; her mother is chaste.’
“We said, ‘Bring her quickly.’ The girl was brought, and he climbed the mountain. He said to her, ‘Cast off your cloak and appear before them,’ and to the people, ‘Follow her tracks.’ He then said to a man of ours named Aḥmar ibn Ḥābis, ‘O Aḥmar ibn Ḥābis, the first horseman is yours.’ Aḥmar charged, speared the first rider, and felled him. The enemy fled, and we seized their spoils.
“We built a shrine over them and called it Dhū al-Khalāṣah; he never foretold anything for us but it came to pass exactly as he said—until your commissioning, O Messenger of Allah. After that, one day he said, ‘O people of Daws, Banū al-Ḥārith ibn Kaʿb have taken up position; mount up!’ So we mounted.
“He then instructed us, ‘Mass the horses together, and bury the enemy in the dust!’”
