ʿAbd Allāh ibn Rabīʿah ibn Khuwayṣ. One of the men of Banū Nimrān related to me—Māzin said:
“One day we offered an ʿatīrah sacrifice before the idol—the ʿatīrah is a slaughtered offering—when I heard a voice coming from the idol itself, saying:
‘O Māzin, listen and you will rejoice: outwardly good, inwardly evil. A Prophet from Muḍar has been sent with the greatest religion of God. So leave this stone that has been carved, and you will be safe from the scorching heat of Saqar.’
“I was seized with great fear at this. A few days later we made another ʿatīrah, and again I heard a voice from the idol:
‘Come to me, come! Hear what must not be ignored: this is a Messenger who has been sent, bearing revealed truth. Believe in him and you will turn aside from the searing fire that is kindled, whose fuel is stones.’
“Māzin continued: ‘This is astonishing—clearly some good has been intended for me.’
“Then a man from the Hijaz arrived among us, and I asked him, ‘What news do you bring?’ He answered, ‘A man called Aḥmad has appeared, and he tells everyone who comes to him: “Respond to the Caller of God.”’ I said, ‘That is exactly what I heard!’ I rushed to the idol, smashed it to pieces, mounted my camel, and travelled until I reached the Messenger of God ﷺ. Through the Hāshimite He guided us from our error,
and never before had his faith crossed my mind.
O rider, convey to ʿAmr and her kin
that I, by my Lord’s command, have broken Bājir.
“By ʿAmr he meant the clan of Banū al-Ṣāmit and their relatives, the family of Khiṭāmah.
“I then said, ‘O Messenger of God, I am a man enamoured of song, fond of coquettish women, and addicted to wine. Hard years have struck us, devouring our wealth and weakening our children, and I have no offspring. Pray to God to remove what I am afflicted with, to send us rain, and to grant me a child.’
“The Prophet ﷺ supplicated:
‘O Allah, replace his love of song with the recitation of the Qur’an; exchange the unlawful for what is lawful; substitute chastity for sin and fornication; bring them rain; and grant him a child.’
“Māzin said: ‘God removed from me what I had suffered, Oman became fertile, I married four free women, and I memorised half…’
