Abū Dāwūd said (1): “ʿAbd al-Aʿlā ibn Ḥammād, Muḥammad ibn al-Muthannā, Muḥammad ibn Bashār, and Aḥmad ibn Saʿīd al-Ribāṭī (2) narrated to us, saying: ‘Wahb ibn Jarīr narrated to us’—Aḥmad remarked, ‘We copied it from his own manuscript, and these are his exact words’—who said: ‘My father narrated to us, saying (3): I heard Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq relate from Yaʿqūb ibn ʿUtbah, from Jubayr ibn Muḥammad ibn Jubayr ibn Muṭʿim, from his father, from his grandfather, who said:
A Bedouin came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, “O Messenger of Allah, our souls are exhausted, our dependents are hungry, and our wealth is depleted [and our livestock are perishing]. So supplicate to Allah for rain on our behalf, for we seek your intercession with Allah and we seek Allah’s intercession with you.”
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, “Woe to you! Do you know what you are saying?” He then glorified Allah, and he continued to proclaim His transcendence until this was evident on the faces of his Companions. He then said:
“Woe to you! No one seeks to intercede with Allah before any of His creatures; Allah’s majesty is far greater than that. Woe to you! Do you know who Allah is? His Throne is over His heavens like this”—and he formed a dome with his fingers above him—“and it creaks beneath Him like the creaking of a saddle beneath its rider.”
In Ibn Bashār’s version it is stated: “Indeed, Allah is above His Throne, and His Throne is above His heavens,” after which he continued the narration.
ʿAbd al-Aʿlā, Ibn al-Muthannā, and Ibn Bashār likewise transmitted it from Yaʿqūb ibn ʿUtbah and Jubayr ibn Muḥammad ibn Jubayr, from his father, from his grandfather. The chain reported by Aḥmad ibn Saʿīd is also [the sound one; this was endorsed by a group of scholars, among them Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn and ʿAlī ibn al-Madīnī, and a number of transmitters narrated it from Ibn Isḥāq as Aḥmad likewise affirmed].
(6) According to what has reached me, the hearings of ʿAbd al-Aʿlā, Ibn al-Muthannā, and Ibn Bashār came from a single manuscript (7). Abū Dāwūd alone recorded this ḥadīth.
