This ḥadīth is singular through this chain and was not recorded by the major compilers (1).
Muhammad ibn Isḥāq (2) narrated from Sālim, the freedman of ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muṭīʿ, from Abū Hurayrah:
“The Messenger of God ﷺ came to the study-house (Bayt al-Midrās) (3) and said, ‘Bring out to me the one among you who is most learned.’ They said, ‘ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ṣūriyā.’ The Messenger of God ﷺ then spoke with him in private, adjuring him by his faith and by the favors God had bestowed upon the Children of Israel—how He fed them with manna and quails and shaded them with the cloud. He asked, ‘Do you know that I am the Messenger of God?’ He replied, ‘Yes, by God. The people know what I know; your description and qualities are plainly set forth in the Torah, but they have envied you.’ The Prophet ﷺ then asked, ‘What prevents you yourself?’ He answered, ‘I dislike opposing my people; yet perhaps they will follow you and embrace Islam.’ He thereupon accepted Islam.
Salamah ibn al-Faḍl narrated from Muhammad ibn Isḥāq, from Muḥammad ibn Abī Muḥammad, from ʿIkrimah, from Ibn ʿAbbās that he used to say:
‘The Messenger of God ﷺ wrote to the Jews of Khaybar:
In the name of God, the All-Merciful, the Compassionate.
From Muhammad, the Messenger of God, the companion of Moses, his brother, and the confirmer of what Moses brought.
Verily God has said to you, O assembly of Jews and people of the Torah: you find in your Book that Muhammad is
“the Messenger of God, and those who are with him are harsh toward the unbelievers, merciful among themselves. You see them bowing and prostrating, seeking bounty from God and His good pleasure. Their mark is upon their faces from the trace of prostration. Such is their likeness in the Torah; and their likeness in the Gospel is like a seed that sends forth its shoot, then strengthens it, so it becomes stout and stands upright upon its stem, delighting the sowers, that through them He may enrage the disbelievers. God has promised those of them who believe and do righteous deeds forgiveness and a great reward.” (Qurʾān 48:29) (5)
I adjure you by God and by what has been sent down to you; I adjure you by Him who fed your forefathers and tribes with manna and quails; and I adjure you by Him who caused the sea to dry up for your ancestors, saving you from Pharaoh and his works: inform us—do you find in what God has revealed to you that you are to believe in Muhammad? If you do not find this in your Book, there is no compulsion upon you; right guidance has become distinct from error. Nevertheless, I invite you to God, Exalted is He, and to His Prophet ﷺ.’
Muhammad ibn Isḥāq ibn Yasār also mentioned in his work Al-Mubtadaʾ (6), on the authority of Saʿīd ibn Bashīr, from Qatādah, from Kaʿb al-Aḥbār.
