—‘When were you made a prophet?’ (1)
He replied, ‘While Adam was still between soul and body.’ (2)
The ḥāfiẓ Abū Nuʿaym also says in his Dalāʾil al-Nubuwwa (3): “Abū ʿAmr ibn Ḥamdān related to us; al-Ḥasan ibn Sufyān related to us; Hishām ibn ʿAmmār related to us; al-Walīd ibn Muslim related to us, from Khulayd ibn Daʿlij—and Saʿīd—from Qatādah, from al-Ḥasan, from Abū Hurayrah that the Prophet ﷺ, regarding the Most High’s words, ‘And when We took from the prophets their covenant’ (al-Ahzāb 33:7), said: ‘I was the first of the prophets in creation and the last of them to be sent.’ (4)
He likewise transmitted it through Hishām ibn ʿAmmār, from Baqiyyah, from Saʿīd ibn Bashīr (5), from Qatādah, from al-Ḥasan, from Abū Hurayrah with the same wording. [It was also reported by Saʿīd ibn Abī ʿArūbah and Shaybān, from Qatādah, who said: We were told that the Messenger of God ﷺ said the same.] (6) This chain is firmer and sounder, and God knows best.
This is a report of his exalted mention in the Highest Assembly—he was known among them as the Seal of the Prophets while Adam had not yet had the spirit breathed into him. God’s knowledge of this certainly preceded the creation of the heavens and the earth; all that remained was what we have described of His proclamation in the Highest Assembly. God knows best.
Abū Nuʿaym has also cited (7), through ʿAbd al-Razzaq, from Maʿmar, from Hammām, from Abū Hurayrah, the agreed-upon ḥadīth: ‘We are the last [community] yet the foremost on the Day of Resurrection, (8) judgment being concluded for us before the rest of creation, although the Book was given to them before us and was given to us afterward.’
Abū Nuʿaym added at the end: ‘Thus he ﷺ was the last of them to be sent, and through him prophethood was sealed; yet he will precede on the Day of Resurrection, because he was the first to be inscribed in prophethood and covenant.’
He then said: ‘This ḥadīth confers a unique virtue upon the Messenger of God ﷺ—God decreed prophethood for him before Adam’s creation was completed. It may also refer to God’s informing His angels of what His prior knowledge and decree had already determined: that He would send him at the end of time.’
