The Story of ʿAmr ibn Murrah al-Juhani

Al-Ṭabarānī relates (1): ʾAlī ibn Ibrāhīm al-Khuzaʿī al-Ahwāzī told us; ʿAbd Allāh ibn Dāwūd ibn Dilhāth ibn Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Misraʿ (2) ibn Yāsir ibn Suwayd—one of the Companions of the Messenger of God ﷺ—told us; my father narrated from his father Dilhāth, from his father Ismāʿīl, that his father ʿAbd Allāh narrated to him from his father, that his father Yāsir ibn Suwayd narrated to him from ʿAmr ibn Murrah al-Juhani, who said:

“I set out during the Age of Ignorance to perform the pilgrimage with a group of my tribe. While in Mecca I fell asleep and saw a dazzling light burst forth from the Kaʿbah, stretching until it reached the mountain of Yathrib and the grazing lands of Juhaynah (3). From within the light I heard a voice saying:
‘The darkness has vanished, the radiance has shone, and the Seal of the Prophets has been sent.’
Then the light flared again, and I beheld the palaces of al-Ḥīrah and the White Palace of al-Madāʾin (4). A voice from the light declared:
‘Islam has appeared, idols have been smashed, and ties of kinship have been restored.’
I awoke in fright and said to my companions, ‘By God, something momentous will befall this clan of Quraysh.’ I informed them of what I had seen.

“When we reached our homeland, word reached us (5)—by God!—that a man called Aḥmad had been sent. I went to him and told him what I had witnessed. He said:

‘O ʿAmr ibn Murrah, I am the Prophet sent to all people. I summon them to Islam, command them to spare blood, maintain bonds of kinship, worship God, renounce idols, perform the pilgrimage to this House, and fast the month of Ramadan out of the twelve months. Whoever responds shall have Paradise, and whoever disobeys shall have the Fire. Believe in God, O ʿAmr, and God will secure you against the terror of Hell.’

“I declared, ‘I bear witness that there is no god but God and that you are the Messenger of God. I believe in what you have brought of the lawful and the unlawful, though many peoples may resent it.’ I then recited to him verses I had composed when I first heard about him. We had an idol, and my father was its custodian; I rose, went to it, and smashed it.

“Afterward I caught up with the Prophet ﷺ while reciting:

[Ṭawīl]
I testify that God is Truth, and that I …
Am the first to abandon the stone-hewn gods.”

(1) The narration is found in al-Tabarani’s Majma‘ al-Zawa’id (vol. 8, pp. 244–246); it is also transmitted by Ibn al-Jawzi in al-Wafa’ (1:81) and by al-Khandhlawi in Hayat al-Sahaba (1:293) et seq. The author will quote it in full from Abu Nu‘aym on p. 179 at footnote 3 of the main text. (2) In the manuscript (ḥ) it appears as “Mushri‘,” and in the printed edition (ṭ) as “Shurayḥ”; both readings are erroneous. The correct form is confirmed by al-Dhahabi in al-Tajrīd (2:72) and in al-Iṣāba (3:478) under the second section of the letter mīm (chapter “M–S”), as well as in al-Jarḥ wa-l-Ta‘dīl (5:48) in the biography of ‘Abd Allāh, and in al-Iṣāba (3:648) in the biography of Yāsir. (3) al-Ash‘ar: a Juhayna mountain that descends toward Yanbū’, its source lying above Medina and flowing in seven stages toward the sea; al-Ash‘ar and al-Ajrad are two Juhayna peaks located between Medina and Syria. (Mu‘jam al-Buldān 1:198; 5:450) (4) Abyad al-Madā’in: the Khosrow palace at al-Madā’in, one of the wonders of the world, which remained standing until the reign of al-Muqtadi around 290 AH. It is the structure described by al-Buhturi in his famous poetic epigram. (Mu‘jam al-Buldān 1:85) (5) The material enclosed in quotation marks is taken from al-Wafa’ (1:81). (6) The printed edition reads as above; in the manuscript it appears as al-aqwāl.
