When he died and was laid to rest, I went to the man in Nasibin and told him my story and what my companion had enjoined upon me (1). He said, “Stay with me,” so I stayed with him and found him to be upon the same way as his two predecessors. I lived with the best of men, and, by God, it was not long before death overtook him. When his final hour came I said, “So-and-so entrusted me to so-and-so, and so-and-so (2) then entrusted me to you. To whom do you now commend me, and what do you bid me do?” He replied, “My son, by God, I know of no one left who follows our path except a man in ʿAmmūriyya (3) in the Byzantine lands. He is upon what we are upon. If you wish, go to him, for he follows our way.”
When he died and was buried, I went to the man in ʿAmmūriyya and related my story to him. He said, “Stay with me,” so I stayed with the best of men, adhering to the guidance and practice of his companions. I worked until I owned some cows and a small flock of sheep.
Then God’s decree came upon him. When his final hour arrived I said, “I was with so-and-so, who entrusted me to so-and-so; then so-and-so entrusted me to so-and-so; and so-and-so (4) entrusted me to you. To whom will you now entrust me, and what do you command me?”
He said, “My son, by God, I know of no one among the people who still adheres to what we have been upon that I could tell you to go to. But the time is near for a prophet to be sent with the religion of Abraham. He will appear in the land of the Arabs; his place of emigration will be to a land situated between two lava fields with palm-trees between them. He has unmistakable signs: he accepts a gift but does not eat from charity, and between his shoulders is the seal of prophethood. If you can make your way to that land, then do so.”
After he died and was buried, I remained in ʿAmmūriyya for as long as God willed. Then a party of merchants from the tribe of Kalb passed by. I said to them, “Take me to the land of the Arabs and I will give you these cows of mine and this flock of sheep.” They agreed, so I gave them my livestock and they took me with them. When we reached Wādī al-Qurā they wronged me and sold me to a Jewish man as a slave. I stayed with him, and when I saw the palm-trees I hoped it might be the town my companion had described, though it did not fully settle in my heart.
While I was with him, a cousin of his from Banū Qurayẓah in Madinah came, bought me from him, and took me to Madinah. By God, no sooner had I seen it than I recognized it by the description my companion had given. I settled there, and the Messenger of God ﷺ was sent forth and remained in Mecca for as long as he did, yet I heard nothing about him because of the burden of slavery I was under. Then he migrated to Madinah. By God, I was at the top of one of my master’s date-palms, working, while my master sat beneath it, when his cousin came and stood by him and said, “So-and-so, may God destroy Banū Qaylah! By God, they are now gathered in Qubāʾ (5) around a man who arrived today from Mecca claiming to be a prophet.”
