He added: Mansūr has corroborated it from Mujāhid.
I say: This report is exceedingly odd. It appears to belong to the two saddle-bags that ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr obtained on the Day of Yarmūk(1); they contained Israelite narratives from which he would relate, and within them were many objectionable and peculiar reports.
Al-Bayhaqī then said(2): Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥāfiẓ informed us; Abū Jaʿfar Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Baghdādī(3) narrated to us; Yaḥyā ibn ʿUthmān ibn Ṣāliḥ related to us; Abū Ṣāliḥ al-Juhanī related to us; Ibn Luhayʿah narrated from Yazīd, from Abū ’l-Khayr(4), from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ, who said:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Allah sent Gabriel to Adam and Eve and said to them, ‘Build a House for Me.’ Gabriel marked out its site; Adam began to dig while Eve carried away the earth until, when water answered him, a voice called from beneath, ‘That is enough, O Adam.’ When they had finished the structure, Allah the Exalted revealed to him that he should circumambulate it, and it was said to him, ‘You are the first of humankind and this is the first House.’ Generations passed until Noah performed the pilgrimage to it, and more generations passed until Abraham raised its foundations.”
Al-Bayhaqī commented: Ibn Luhayʿah is alone in transmitting it as a marfūʿ report.
I say: He is weak; the version that stops with ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr is stronger and more reliable. Allah knows best.
Al-Rabīʿ(5) said: Al-Shāfiʿī conveyed to us; Sufyān narrated from Ibn Abī Labīd, from Muḥammad ibn Kaʿb al-Quraẓī —or someone else—who said:
“Adam performed the pilgrimage, and the angels met him saying, ‘May your rites be accepted, O Adam; we performed pilgrimage two thousand years before you.’”
Yūnus ibn Bukayr narrated from Ibn Isḥāq(6): “He told me Baqiyyah—or he said: a trustworthy man from the people of Madinah—from ʿUrwah ibn al-Zubayr, who said, ‘There is no Prophet who failed to perform pilgrimage to the House, except Hūd and Ṣāliḥ.’”
I have already mentioned their own pilgrimage to it(7). What is intended is pilgrimage to its site and precinct, even if no structure stood there. Allah knows best.
