“People of Muḍar! For what cause are you fighting?”
Hawāzin replied, “To what are you calling us?”
He said, “To peace.”
They asked, “And how will that be?”
He answered, “We shall pay the blood money for your slain, place hostages in your hands as surety, and waive the blood money owed to us.”
They said, “Who will guarantee this for us?”
He replied, “I.”
They asked, “And who are you?”
He said, “ʿUtbah ibn Rabīʿah.”
On those terms the truce was concluded. Quraysh sent forty men over to them as hostages, among them Ḥakīm ibn Ḥizām. When Banū ʿĀmir ibn Ṣaʿṣaʿah saw the hostages in their custody, they forgave the blood money, and thus the War of al-Fijār came to an end.
Al-Umawī has recorded the Fijār wars and their individual days in detail, transmitting the material at length from al-Athram—al-Mughīrah ibn ʿAlī—from Abū ʿUbaydah Maʿmar ibn al-Muthannā.
Section: His ﷺ Presence at the Pact of al-Fuḍūl
The ḥāfiẓ al-Bayhaqī reports: Abū Saʿd al-Mālinī told us, Abū Aḥmad ibn ʿAdī the ḥāfiẓ told us, Yaḥyā ibn ʿAlī ibn Hāshim al-Khaffāf related to us, Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Adramī related to us, Ismāʿīl ibn ʿUlayyah from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Isḥāq from al-Zuhrī from Muḥammad ibn Jubayr ibn Muṭʿim, from his father [and from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAwf], who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ declared,
“I witnessed with my uncles the Pact of the Muṭayyabīn; I would not wish to break it— or words to that effect— even for a herd of red camels.”
Bishr ibn al-Mufaḍḍal transmitted the same report from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān.
Al-Bayhaqī further said: Abū Naṣr ibn Qatādah informed us, Abū ʿAmr ibn Maṭar related to us, Abū Bakr ibn Aḥmad ibn Dāwūd al-Simnānī narrated to us, Muʿallā ibn Mahdī related to us, Abū ʿAwānah from ʿUmar ibn Abī Salamah from his father, from Abū Hurayrah, who said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said,
“I did not attend any pact of Quraysh save the Pact of the Muṭayyabīn; and I would not wish to have a herd of red camels while having broken it.”
He added: “The Muṭayyabūn were Hāshim, Umayyah, Zuhrah, and Makhzūm.”
Al-Bayhaqī comments: “This explanation is reported as an insertion in the ḥadīth, and I do not know who stated it. Some biographers maintain that what the Prophet ﷺ meant was the Pact of al-Fuḍūl, for he ﷺ did not live to witness the Pact of the Muṭayyabīn.”
