From Abū Hurayrah who said:
The Prophet ﷺ visited his mother’s grave, whereupon he wept and moved those around him to tears. He then said: “I asked my Lord to permit me to visit my mother’s grave and He permitted me; I asked Him to allow me to seek forgiveness for her (1) but He did not permit me. Therefore, visit graves, for they remind you of death” (2).
Muslim likewise narrated (3) — through Abū Bakr ibn Abī Shaybah, ʿAffān, Ḥammād ibn Salamah, Thābit, from Anas — that a man said, “Messenger of Allah, where is my father?” He replied, “In the Fire.” When the man turned away (4) he called him back and said, “My father and your father are in the Fire.”
Al-Bayhaqī also recorded (5) — from Abū Nuʿaym al-Faḍl ibn Dukayn, Ibrāhīm ibn Saʿd, al-Zuhrī, ʿĀmir ibn Saʿd, from his father — who said:
A Bedouin came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, “My father used to maintain the ties of kinship; he used to do this and that. Where is he?” He answered, “In the Fire.” The Bedouin seemed upset and said, “Messenger of Allah, where [is my father? He said, ‘In the Fire.’ He said, ‘Where] is your father?” He replied, “Whenever you pass by the grave of a disbeliever, give him the tidings of the Fire.” The narrator added: The Bedouin later embraced Islam and said, “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has obliged me with a burdensome task; I have never passed by the grave of a disbeliever without giving him the tidings of the Fire.” This report is rare, and the two Ṣaḥīḥs did not transmit it through this route (7).
Imām Aḥmad said (8): Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān related to us; Saʿīd — that is, Ibn Abī Ayyūb — related to us; Rabīʿah ibn Sīf al-Maʿāfirī related, from Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Ḥubulī, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr, who said:
While we were walking with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ he caught sight of a woman whom we did not think he recognized. When he reached the middle of the road he stopped until she drew near, and behold, it was Fāṭimah, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said, “What has brought you out of your house, O Fāṭimah?” She replied, “I went to the people of that house to invoke mercy for their deceased and to offer them condolences.” He said, “Perhaps you accompanied them to al-Kudā?” She said, “God forbid that I should have gone there with them; I have heard you mention concerning that place what you mention.” He said, “Had you reached it (11) with them, you would not see Paradise until your grandfather had seen it.”
