Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

Some of them corroborate others, and the overall purport of all of them goes back to the ḥadīth of Wāthilah ibn al-Asqaʿ (1)—and God knows best.

I say: In this same vein Abū Ṭālib, extolling the Prophet ﷺ, recites:
[Ṭawīl]
Whenever Quraysh assembles one day to boast of its glory,
ʿAbd Manāf is the secret of that glory and its very core.(2)
If the nobles of ʿAbd Manāf are sought,
then in Hāshim lie its foremost chiefs of old.
And should they ever boast, it is Muḥammad
who is the Chosen One from their essence, the most generous of them all.
Quraysh—its lowly and its lofty—banded together against us;
yet they gained no triumph, and their designs went astray.
Long have we refused to tolerate an injustice:
whenever haughty cheeks were turned, we set them straight.
We guard its sanctuary on every day of peril,
and drive from its sacred stones whoever would dare approach.
By us the withered branch revived once more;
indeed, in our care its roots are watered and grow.(3)

Abū al-Sukkayn (4) Zakariyyā ibn Yaḥyā al-Ṭāʾī relates in the well-known booklet attributed to him: “My paternal uncle, Zahr ibn Ḥiṣn, told me, from his grandfather Ḥumayd ibn Munhib, who said:

My grandfather Khuraym ibn Aws said: I migrated to the Messenger of God ﷺ. I arrived as he was returning from Tabūk and accepted Islam. I then heard al-ʿAbbās ibn ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib say, ‘O Messenger of God, I wish to praise you in verse.’ The Messenger of God ﷺ replied, ‘Recite—and may God never cause your teeth to fall out.’ He then began:
[Manṣariḥ]
Long before this you were pure, lodged in sheltered shade,
in a secure repository where leaves were sewn together.(6)
Then you descended to the lands—no human being yet,
neither a morsel of flesh nor a clinging clot—
Rather, a drop of seed aboard the Ark,
while Nasr and his people were swallowed by the flood."

(1) In al-Dalā’il, following this passage the phrase “wa-Abu Huraira” (“and Abu Huraira”) appears, which is a significant addition. (2) Sar al-hasab (“the middle of the rank”): literally its midpoint; thus one says of someone that he is “in the sar of his people,” meaning “among their best.” See al-Lisān under s-r-r. (3) The term al-dhawī derives from dhawā (“to wither, to weaken”), a recognized linguistic usage; in the Ḥ and Ṭ editions it appears as al-dhawāʾ, whereas the form in the Dīwān is established. Al-arūm is the plural of arūmah (“root”). See al-Lisān under ‘arm’. The verses occur in Dīwān Shaykh al-Abāṭiḥ (p.25) and in Ibn Hishām’s Sīrah (1:269). In the Ḥ edition, beside the poem’s final couplet the variant balagha (“he reached,” i.e. “stood facing”) is recorded. (4) In the Ṭ edition “Abū al-Sakan” is a scribal error; the reading in Ḥ is correct. See al-Ikmāl, footnote 2 (2:315), quoting ʿAbd al-Ghanī. (5) The verses are found in Ibn ʿAsākir’s Tārīkh (al-Sīrah al-Nabawiyyah, 1:209), al-Khaṭīb’s Al-Asmāʾ al-Mubhama (p.249), and Majmaʿ al-Zawāʾid (8:217–218). Ibn Manẓūr records six under al-Lisān (s-l-b, kh-s-f, ’f-q, n-t-q, z-l-l, h-m-n), attributing the first four to Ḥassān ibn Thābit; see his Dīwān (ed. Walīd ʿArfāt, London 1971, 1:498). al-Qāḍī ʿIyāḍ includes them in al-Shifāʾ (1:167–168) with this additional couplet: Ya bard nār al-khalīl yasabbiban… li-ʿiṣmat al-nār wa-hiya taḥtaruq (“O cooling of the fire of the Friend, you are its guardian, shielding the fire even as it burns.”) The full sequence, with glosses, is given in Sharḥ al-Mawāhib (3:98–100). (6) That is, in Paradise, where Adam and Eve (may Allah have mercy on them) were covered by the leaves of Paradise; they overlapped the leaves to conceal their nakedness. See al-Lisān under kh-s-f.
