We have not located its isnād (chain of transmission).
Al-Rāzī said: It is called “the Foundation” for two reasons: first, because it is the opening surah of the Quran and thus functions as the foundation; second, [that the noblest act of worship after faith is the prayer] (1), and this surah contains (2) all that faith necessarily requires, while the prayer is not complete without it (3).
It is also known by other names: “Surah of Gratitude,” “Surah of Supplication,” “Surah of Learning One’s Request,” “Surah of the Treasure”—for it is taken from a treasure beneath the Throne—and “Mother of Praises.” Allah, exalted be He, knows best.
(1) The space between the braces is blank in the manuscript and has been completed from al-Tafsir al-Kabir. Al-Razi proposes a third interpretation as well, but he places it after the first one, saying: “Second: it contains the noblest aims,” and then details this view. God knows best. A marginal note in the manuscript adds: “Thirteenth: al-Kafiya (the Sufficient One), so called because it makes all other suras unnecessary; Umm al-Quran can replace the rest, whereas none of them can replace it.” I am unsure whether this marginalia is the author’s own addition or that of a copyist.
(2) Al-Tafsir al-Kabir reads: “ala kull” (in every respect).
(3) Al-Tafsir al-Kabir, vol. 1, p. 147.
