ʿAbbās. (1)
Others maintained that the first passage revealed was, “O you who are wrapped up” (al-Muddaththir 74:1), as occurs in the sound ḥadith of Jābir. (2) A further view holds that the opening words were, “Recite in the name of your Lord who created” (al-ʿAlaq 96:1), and this is the correct opinion: when those verses descended upon him he returned home and wrapped himself up, whereupon, “O you who are wrapped up” was sent down.
The second position on the place where al-Fātiḥah was revealed is that it came down in Madinah. This was asserted by a group of scholars, among them Mujāhid. Mansūr related from Mujāhid that Iblīs let out four screams: when he was cursed, when he was expelled from Paradise, when the Prophet ﷺ was commissioned, and when the Opening of the Book was revealed—and it was revealed in Madinah.
Al-Ṭabarānī narrates in al-Awsat: ʿUbayd ibn Ghannām told us; Abū Bakr ibn Abī Shaybah told us; Abū al-Ahwaṣ related from Mansūr, from Mujāhid, from Abū Hurayrah that Iblīs screamed when the Opening of the Book was revealed—and it was revealed in Madinah. He added, “No one transmits it from Mansūr except Abū al-Ahwaṣ, and Abū Bakr ibn Abī Shaybah is alone in relating it.” (3)
